22 cal 53 gr Triple shock bullets
« on: April 24, 2005, 06:27:49 PM »
Has anyone tried out the 22 cal 53 gr tsx bullets in a 22-250 rifle. A friend of mine is having a hard time find a load that will shoot in his rifle.  He said that his rifle has a 1 in 14 twist and he is thinking since the tsx are a bit longer that they are not stabilizing out of his rifle. He has had some bullets printing oblong holes on his target at 100 yds and this is why he thinks that his twist might be to fast for these bullets. If anyone has some tips or thoughts on this issue, they would be much appreciated.

I think he means the twist is too slow. The bullets are not spinning fast enough to be stable. Pushing them to max velocity might be worth a try, if he has not done that yet. Their website reccomends working up to 1 or 2 grains over max published charges when using triple shocks.

Anybody shoot deer with this bullet, and if so, how do these perform?

If this 22-250 is going to be used for varmints and accuracy is your primary concern try the 40 gr Hornady v-max loaded with vhitavouri n-140, hogdon's varget, or h-380.

A 53gr bullet that won't stabilize in a 1/14 twist barrel ain't worth fooling with no matter what its alledged magical qualities are.  Too many other good bullets out there.

Ramrod is correct on both counts (1 twist & 2 velocity).

I would push this bullet as hard as safe pressures would allow.
I don't think that twist is the problem.

But remember, every gun is different & that gun may not like that
bullet period. And as beemanbeme said, in that case move on.
