The 10g?
« on: May 01, 2005, 06:45:15 PM »
Im a newbie when it come to alot of thing in life that Im into. But, were did the 10g go to? I hear the old timers<-------"with all do respect"> talk about them, but I have never even seen a round nor a gun to match. Are they still around? Were they really that much bigger then a 12g? Did they make slugs for them?

Several manufacturers are still making them, Remington, Browning, Mossberg among others.
Here's a link to Remington's......

I shoot a Browning BPS 10ga for geese.  That same gun also used to be my turkey gun.

The problem isn't the kick, it's that the gun weighs so much I don't want to carry it.  I think the 3 1/2" 12ga has taken over much of the market.  My new turkey gun (3 1/2" 12ga 870) patterns as well and is much much easier to carry and hold from a sitting position.

I think it is always easier to get a bigger bore to pattern tighter than a smaller bore, given equal loads. But a 10 is always a heavy gun. I had a 10 gauge H&R single shot that killed way further than anyone would believe, with a 3-1/2 inch case loaded with 2 ounces of copper plated BB shot. But it weighed a ton, and I sold it.

I don't think Mossberg makes a 10ga.  I think the only ones still made are by Browning and Remiongton, at least tube fed ones.  Most that I see are autos, presumably because they would absorb more recoil.
