I have a trapdoor in very good condition. Is a 1200 fps load with 3031 safe to use tailored to a 400 or 500 gr bullet?

Yeah, probably. But why push things? That rifle was made for black powder and lead bullets. My suggestion is to feed it properly and enjoy it for what it is. It'll last longer and you will get to experience and understand it more fully.

I agree 110%. Sure you can use smokeless in it as long as it is loaded using the trapdoor loads. But shooting them with black powder cartridges is a lot of fun. I only shoot black powder cartridges in my Shiloh Sharps, even though it will take Ruger #1 loads. Just something about old guns and black powder cartridges.
