I like silver keys better.  (sorry, you're having waaay too much fun with this and I had to try to rain on your parade LOL :)  :-D  :)  )

Seriously, that's a beautiful horn and I'm happy for ya.  I'm glad my horn is all beat up and stuff.  I'd hate to have one that I had to take care of.  (oops, there I go again I just can't help myself).

Curtis,

You're pretty funny  . I actually thought about getting that in a black lacquer, but that red brass (in the keys) would just look funky against the black. Plus it was $200 more...so....the original lacquer won the vote.

Yea, you also have to spend beacoups de bucks takin care of it. Lacquer polish, pad guards, neck guards, etc etc.... :) . So, that mighta been another issue. You should have your horn overhauled. WWBW will do everything to it include a re-lacquering for about $600. I don't think that's too bad.

I want Bams opinion on the horn...he might actually succeed in raining out my parade... :)  :-D In world news today, a 747 carrying a shipment of Selmer saxes downed today...  :-D   :D

Well, unless that 747 crashes and unless wwbw is wrong, I should have my horn between May 4-6 according to my calculations. Of course, I could be wrong. I hope I'm not. When I get some more funs I'm finally getting a metal mouthpiece...looking at an Otto Link *7 with Rovner and maybe some Vandoren's to boot. The matter is when I get more funds, that could be in September for all I know   :) . But we shall see. Take care fellas.  :D

Good news & bad news:

Which do you want first?

Okay, the bad news.  My daughter was supposed to drop off the reeds at the post office on her way home from school last week.  Guess what she found inside her back pack this morning?  She's been pulling her hair out over her "honors english" class lately, so I wasn't hard on her at all.  Poor kid has been working her tail off to bring up her grades.  I figured I'd better get my butt over to the library and let you know.

Anyway, that's going to be taken care of today.  Sorry.

I listened to the "Colorado Springs Big Jazz Band" again on Wednesday night.  I think I may eventually be able to play with them?  Anyway, I've mainly been doing some networking - saxwise.  I've hooked up with a guy who has 30 years experience on the horn and likes to hang out and talk vintage saxes.  He's been pro for many years, and has been recorded also. He checked out my horn, and said, "Dang, that horn is meant to be played.....I mean played until you sweat!  That's what it was made for."

Hehe....never had anyone tell me that before.  I enjoyed hearing him say that.  Maybe I'll go and pay him a visit on Saturday.

We are also visiting a new church that has services on Saturday evenings with a contemporary praise band.  I haven't heard them yet, but I'll know more after Saturday evening.  Who knows, maybe I can contribute there also?

Oh heck, since you guys have been so patient on the reeds, I'm going to throw in some Alexanders also.  I'll have to re-open the envelopes, but hey, good things are worth waiting for, and they are FREE right?  Besides, Joel doesn't have his horn yet anyway?  Maybe it's just "meant to be" this way?

Joel:

I never criticize a horn I haven't heard or played.  Who knows, maybe you're getting a real "player" with this purchase.  Do you really want my Otto Link?   I'd be willing to trade for a "good" Alto mouthpiece with a #7 facing, but it would have to be a brand that is notorious for sounding good.

Curtis:

I've got three reed holders, so I can't see me needing another, but THANK YOU for the offer though.  I've got reeds all over the place because I'm still trying to settle into what works best with the new Meyer.
It's starting to look like Alexander 2.5s are going to do the trick.  I still remain pleased with their quality and sound, but the #2s were too soft and led to many squeaks and squeals.  The 2.5s aren't doing that.  I also got a box of Alexander DC #3s.  They sound good also, but lack the "buzz" of the #2.5 Superials.

You like them silver keys huh?  How about an all silver sax?  My horn also came in a silver model.  You should look at the vintage horns when you get time.  You get ALOT of horn for a lot less money.

Oh, and check this out.  I finally got the guts to try and repad my own sax.  I re-did the three palm key pads.  It was too easy! For real.  I saved about $20 over what a guy was going to charge me.  Since that worked well, I am going to do the octave key and and the Eb key also.  The store is charging me $2.00 for each pad, which is VERY expensive in my opinion, but they would charge much more to do the work also, so I still save plenty.

Bams,

I would never ask a man to give up his metal. I'm all right in getting my own. I really don't feel like buying a Selmer or a Morgan or a Meyer or an Otto rubber just to trade with you...no offense...just don't make sense. I will be getting a metal over the summer, and it might be a mistake but guess what...I really don't care.  :)

Ima leaving for a fishing trip so I'll talk to you guys whenever. Wish me luck!!  :D

Bams, thanks for a great post.  It was good to "hear" from you again.  I really enjoyed reading of your experience with the "pros" and I feel your enthusiasm.  Hopefully you will get to sit in some time.

Don't sweat the reed thing.  Kids have a lot on their mind these days.  Besides, no money is riding on this deal so who in their right mind would complain?  Thanks for offering to throw in the Alexanders.  I may kick myself for not exploring different reeds before now.

It's good to hear about your new church.  I hope you can get involved in a big way.  After leading in worship (music) at our church for two years after the staff left in a split, and playing in the praise band before the split and now at our new church, I just would not feel right just sitting in a pew.  Worship seems more personal and moving when you are giving of yourself.

You've got me thinking about doing my own sax overhaul now.  You have eased my mind on the pads, so the only unknown is possible wear at the pivot points.  I guess you just check for slop, but if there is excessive play what do you do about it???

Just what I need anyway, another DIY project.  I think DIY (do it yourself) is my middle name sometimes.  The only problem is I'm great at starting them and only so-so at finishing!     Right now I am replacing my central air conditioner.  That is one I definately have to finish soon!!

Joel, I'm betting you will love the metal and get to say    :drink4:    :yeah:  to Bams.  LOL  Oh, and good luck on your fishing trip.

First on the agenda...I changed my handle to match 'me'....whadaya think? I couldn't have done it better myself   :)

Fishing trip stunk...opening day of trout season in PA....had a palomino swipe at my bait in the morning then went back to the same hole in the evening and he took my Blue Fox then shook it a few feet from shore...gotta love that trout fishing  :-D

Now on to sax stuff

Curtis, I really wouldn't start screwing around with ur sax. Let a professional do it, even if it would cost you money. I think I screwed up my 'old' tenor (which I handed off to the school by the way...part of my tax refund) by screwing around with the screws too much and the G# key is now sticking. My clarinet had a dead action key to it when I tightened the one screw too much.

Plus if ya let WWBW do it they'll do it professionaly and they'll also re-lacquer it for ya...I was thinking about having my alto done like that and pre-order engraving for it too...but I don't have $700 to do that with at the moment.

That's all I can think of for now....tty all later.  :D

Ya JP, er Fish, er saxman I like the nick change.  I guess since you can't catch fish you had to change it. :)  :-D  :)   Well, if it was easy they'd let women and children do it........oh wait, never mind.

Thanks for the advise on the sax repair, nothing is decided yet and I can still play it as is until I decide.  At any rate I would only get pads and mechanical stuff done.  My horn doesn't rate a new laquer job.  It was once dropped on its head and still has a few wrinkles in the neck.  I had loaned it to my niece years ago since her family could not afford a horn and she wanted to be in band.  They did not mention the mishap but they did what they could to repair it.  I know it must have set them back more than they could afford.  No regrets on my part, at least my niece got to be in band for a few years.  It also survived a few years of my daughter playing it in band.  So you can see my horn has led several lives since I bought it for $200 (less than half price) in '75.  I got my money's worth out of it I'd say.

Later,
Curtis

I'm starting to feel like I'm talking to myself again....

But I'll nudge. I just got terrible news. My tenor is being backordered again until the 8th of May. I'm gonna die because of a stupid Selmer if it don't get here soon.

How's Curtis and Bams doin? Haven't heard from either of ya in a while.  :D

Oh, here's a real nice pic of my LaVoix...better than the one I posted earlier. Note the neck...it even has an engraved 'S' (and I think it's colored red...a pic of the LaVoix alto off the same site showed the neck and it looked like it was red)

JP the truth is that it is dangerous for me to hang around you too much.  Your excitement is that contagious and I can't afford to catch the fever from you.  I have shop payments and two motorcycle payments.  I NEED a sax but I don't need the payments.

I would think I am totally hopeless but I AM in the process of selling my travel trailer (I never use it any more since I started motorcycle touring) and I'm trying to sell my Bronco II that I don't feel like working on any more.  I'm keeping the catamaran and ski boat (I don't know why I don't use them any more either but maybe there is hope).

So, you see my problem?  Once I get a toy I can't seem to be able to part with it, so I stay broke and have a bunch of broken toys laying around that I don't use.

Seriously though, I am sorry to hear about more delays for your order.  Thanks for posting the pic, it looks real nice.  Hang in there, you'll have that baby in your hands soon!  Hopefully Bams will swing by the library and post an encouraging word as well.

Curtis,

I was starting to think you were serious about not checking in because of this little virus I have. Oh don't worry, I take medication every day. Makes it non-contagious. I think... :?  :) .

Good luck on scooping up some $$$. Maybe I'll swing down towards Texas and host a benefit gig for ya  :)  :-D (that is of course AFTER I get the Selmer).

I too hope to hear from Bams!  :D

Well fellas, even more delay in my order.

Tenor isn't supposed to be in the warehouse now until 5/12. And it's funny...I had cancelled some items off of the original $1,601 and some odd cents I sent in and I had knocked the order down to like $1,573.--. So I called to see if I could get three day shipping added to my order. Well, what happened was they were gonna take the money I owed them and put it towards the shipping. But there was still like a $2 debt...said they couldn't waive it...I asked the woman on the phone, "I don't mean to be rude, but could I speak to your supervisor?" and she's like, "Hold on a moment". So I go on hold for a lil bit...she gets back on and tells me that they waived the shipping. Wow, how about that. And I said to her, "Alright, so if that LaVoix isn't here by the 15th after it's been in the warehouse by the 12th you can expect a call from me." and with that we exchanged good-bye's and hung up.

That is the last time I'll buy a horn off of wwbw. Guy named Dave Kessler out in Nevada I think had the LaVoix for $1,490. Now he's $300 cheaper than wwbw, I guess I should look at him next time I need a horn.

Curtis, I'm tellin ya, my disease ain't contagious, it's all right, and even if it is, wear one of them self-protection suits in here and you'll be fine :) . I still wonder where Bams is...makin me worried :? . Oh well. Ta ta for now!  :D

Yep, I must be talkin to myself again. Oh well, it's fun!!  :)

Now according to my order the LaVoix is in the "Now Shipping" process...which means it should leave the warehouse for shipment either tomorrow or Saturday...which means I should have it either Tuesday or Wednesday, Thursday latest. OMG....it's been too long :(  :P . But my first shipment of goods is gonna be here on Saturday, and the next package (one thing...the neck saver  ) is gonna be here on Monday before 4:30 PM according to the FedEx tracking numbers. The big moment has arrived, it's about flipping time!!!  :D

Well guys, the humble moment came today.

The LaVoix came today!!! :yeah:

A beautiful player to say the least. I've never played a sax as easy blowing as this one. Effortless, even down in the lower register. I'm having a somewhat difficult time getting the altissimo to speak, but that's okay. I'll work on it. Hope to hear from you guys. Take care. :D

That is great news JP.  I can only dream of a horn that is easy playing.  Mine fights me for every note it gives up.  I can forget anything below about low D.  One of these days when I don't have motorcycle payments and grown kids to help out (ok the motorcycle part is feasable LOL) I'll get me a brand spanking new horn.  I have never ventured into tenor territory but I think I'd like it.

Keep enjoying that horn and when you get it up to speed I want a recording.  I hope Bams shows up soon to share in your good times.

Well guys the cheer drinks are over;

I had to send the LaVoix back

My friend and I were looking at it and there was a major flaw in the G# key...something mechanical like the rod inside the rib of the key might have gotten bent or something and it's causing it to stick open once in a while...especially if you just tap it like in a fast passage.

I will be getting a replacement, don't worry, it'll all be all right...I hope. Haven't heard from you guys in a loooong time. Hope to see something here!  :D
