Ok... 375 or 416 or 458 winchester short mags...
« on: December 07, 2004, 01:40:50 PM »
who has done it?

For the 375 WSM, I am thinking about building a short barrelled (20") light rifle...  kevlar stock... pencil barrel...  probably a 1.5-5x leopold in Tally's.

For the 416 WSM, I am think more along the line of a traditional express rifle but with a short tube (20") but using a barrel band front and 1/4 rib express rear.  I'd go with a laminate stock.

For the 458 WSM, I am tempt to shove it into a Browning lever gun.  Toss an 18.5" tube on it, laminate stock set, teflon it and using a bead front and ghost ring rear.  Who knows the 458 WSM is the one that I am least interested in since I already have lots of big bore lever guns.

If anybody has done these WSMs, ballistics or even just the # of a guy that has a reamer would be nice.

Thanks,

SA

Wow Spyro, you really are back into the thick of it again. Some mighty ambitious projects to keep us apprised of as they move along. What ever happened to the .416 Rigby Encore? You still have it or has it self destructed?

I actually sold it 16" Braked 416 Rigby barrel that I had... that this was a cannon and I killed a few things with it too... lol...

The load that I used to shoot out of that thing was too much...  I used to load it at the range too...  People were shocked at all the powder going into that case.  I'd have to look it up but if I remember correctly... it was 108 grs of IMR4350 topped off with a 400 gr Barnes X.

Anyway, I'll probably build the 416 WSM first...

The .458 WSM?  Sorry but it's already been done.  It's called the .450 Marlin.  Great cartridge too, when loaded properly.  Already available in the Browning BLR, Winchester M70, just to get away from the tubular magazine rifles.  Lawdog

msorenso,

The two loads I use in my Winchester M70, 24” Shilen barrel(1-14” twist) are,

500 gr. Barnes TSX & Banded Solid

50.3 gr. of IMR-4198 for 2,072 fps.
47.4 gr. of H4198 for 2,067 fps.

The .450 Marlin really shows what it can do when loaded with spitzer/pointed bullets.  If you would like any other information on building a custom bolt action .450 Marlin just ask.  I am in the process of building another one a Weatherby Mark V action I acquired.  Lawdog

I think the 458 Socom would be the closest thing to a 458 wsm.
go look at one on ssk's site

Here was my one attempt. This round was loaded in the early 90's and is the only one I have left from the project. It's pretty self explanatory, and good thing because the most I remember about it was where to find the cartridge :)
