5.9 x 28 mm

Saw this from FN yesterday.  Two pistols models:  one in double-action only, one in single action only.  Weight of pistol 1.36 pounds.  20 round capacity.  S190 rounds are bottle-necked, steel tipped and aluminum backed, intended to tumble on impact.  They weigh 31 grains, and travel 2345 fps.  FN says recoil is 2/3 of a 9mm.  They are being advertised as a handgun or machine pistol round that shoots flat up to 200 meters, and penetrates Kevlar helmets and vests.  I just don't get it.

What don't you get?
Another round & gun being developed mostly to market to the military.
I don't think it is available to common folk yet.
Don't forget almost all rifles can penetrate bullet resistant vests.

Very low recoil and high energy are the selling points. It looks like a 17HMR cartridge, but slightly larger and centerfire instead of rimfire. It's hard to mistake for anything else.

There's a lot of hype around the cartridge.

Not available yet? They have been available for almost two years now and selling like nothing else. Currentally the ammunition is a pain to get since FN stopped producing the SS192 loading. There are places to buy it, but they are charging about 45-55 dollars a box.
Normal cost is about 15-19 a box. We have the dies in stock for those that would like to re-load.

I guess I'm remembering an article from a few years ago & it may have been about the armor piercing ammo that was being tested for the military at the time.
Haven't been in a gun store shopping for a while.  :(
Try not to hold that against me.

I got one of these 5.7X28's and I like it a bunch,
The lack of over penetration, High capacity, low recoil, dependability and the funky trigger guard   , are what turned me onto it.
Hornady is making ammo for general public and the cost is about $20 a box on the net.
I dislike the general thought that this is a cop killer and wish the ammo reserved for police and military were available to the public. Lord knows the bad guys are going to get it anyway, and, though the hen would disagree, I have more sense than they do.

I would just add-it's not the bullet or the gun that's a cop killer, it's the criminal that shoots said police officer.
