Kids and crows
« on: September 17, 2005, 06:50:35 AM »
This is my son's first year toting a gun in the woods (he is 9), our squirrel season started Sept. 1.  Our squirrel numbers are down this year due to
low mast and hard winter last year so the beginning of our season was a bit disappointing until I decided to take him crow hunting.  I put together a homemade caller (instructons can be found on the predator masters forum) and I got out my old crow hunting tapes.  We have been out twice and killed five birds.  Crow hunting is great for kids because...you don't have to be perfectly still or quiet, lots of game, and the excitement of incoming crows keeps a kids mind off the recoil of the gun when they shoot.  You don't need a lot of time (drive to the spot, set-up and call).  It is fast and furious for a few moments (no time to get bored).  You don't need a lot of land (my 15 watt horn speaker has enough volume to attract them from a long distance).  Crow hunting and kids has my vote!
