GOOD day at the range!!!
« on: June 11, 2005, 11:07:01 AM »
We had a work party at the club today.Place needed a little TLC. I asked the care taker if he had any heavy 30 cal molds. He gave me a bucket full of kerosene with over a dozen molds soaking in it.!!!! I will have to replace some of the wood handles and still need to free up the handle to mold joint on some of the molds. They all open and close okay,I think? If I have to remove the handles from the mold do I have to drill them out?  May be a soaking in Kroil just over the blocks and NOT soaking the wood ?

Sounds like you got the handles with them. You can replace the wood without taking the metal off the blocks, and you might consider that if you have plenty of handles and some of the screws are really stuck.

Soaking in penetrating oil never hurts, and a light application of heat often helps, but drilling is an absolute last resort.  The best way to take out stuck screws is with a drill press. Unplug the press and chuck a bit shaft with a rachet over it. Clamp the blocks in a vise, apply downward pressure with the drill press, and turn with the ratchet.  Bit can't slip and the screw will either come out or bust off. I have very rarely broken one off, but that's the time to consider drilling.

Sorry, but in the excitment, I forgot to mention they are all Lee molds!
the handles are pinned to the scissor and some of these joints seem to be rusted yet.At least they don't move when I open and close the blocks.
