Got tired of paying the price for patches, was talking to one of the guys at the gun shop about it and he said make my own. He does upolstry(sp) work and has a machine for cutting cloth to cover bottons with. I measured a patch (I shoot a 50 and 54 cal), and its just over a inch and a quarter but not quite inch and a half. He has a 1 1/2 cutter. Picked up a yard of cotton material that mea .010 thickness ( this is the normal thickness I use in both guns. He said with his "button press" he can cut about 30 patches at a time. Figger will cut 2 inch strips and fold it into 2 inch sq.s should be able to get a bunch of dry patches that I can lube latter.

Why cut to strips ?  Just fold it & stick it in the punch press & have at it.

I cut mine with a rotary cutter & can cut abpout 3000-4000  1.5" patches in about 15 minutes.  Now I use all square patches but they all shoot the same to me.........

1" patches you get a bout  6000 patches in 15 min as you are cutting more patches from the same bolt of material.  

In an hour you can cut way more than you will ever shoot in a year..........

Birddog, never thought about using sq. patches. :? . Sounds like a good plan. The reason I said about using the strips and folding them over is because the guy that does upolstry(still cant spell it) said thats the way he cuts them for button covers. Beings he's got the cutter and he offered to cut them for me, I'll go with his plan and keep the sq. ones in mind.

I also have been using square patches for my little gun and wondering about them. I posted a thread and maybe we can get input on pros & cons.

I cut pillow ticking in 1 1/2 inch strips full length of the bolt with a rotary cover. Then lube the strip and load balls into a board with appropriate sized holes, and cut 'em off with a straight razon. When at a match where I'm gonna shoot a whole lot, I just chew on the strip and cut the patch at the muzzle. This way the ball's always centered on the patch.
Wash and tumble dry your cloth bolt a couple of times to get the sizin' out of it and shrink up the cloth a bit.  :D
