Squirrel Rifle Project
« on: June 01, 2005, 09:32:31 AM »
I will be looking for a new bolt action squirrel rifle for the upcoming season.  I was going to purchase a CZ 452 American but the Marlin 981T looks and feels good too.  What do you think about these rifles?

Will the CZ be more accurate than the Marlin assuming trigger work would be done on either rifle purchased?

I hunt over squirrel dogs and usually carry a shotgun since those little critters will run about a 1/3 of the time but next year I want to do more hunting with a .22.

Thanks

Hi Strike, nice to have you on the forums. I hope you stay around awhile. You will learn more here then in most class rooms.

I see you are from Middle Tenn. I am also from middle Tenn. I live in Goodlettsville. You close? I am a hugh tree rat hunter. I could all ways use another gunner.  :-)

I really like Marlins, but CZ makes a great rifle too. I use a Mod 60. and like you I have a little break down 20g too, for thoughs running shots. It would be a close tie for me. I would go with the one that feels the best in your hands.

I do not know if you are close to me, but if you are I would be more then happy to let you shoot a few of my rimfires to see what might suit you the best. I do alot of rimfire yote, rabbit, racoon, groundhog, crow and beaver shooting too.

I am sure you will get great other opinons here to help ad you in your hunt for a good bolt rimfire.

Will you be putting a scope on? And what kinda ammo you like best? I like the CCI stingers for most and the CCI Velocitors for yote and big coons.

Dave,

I live west of Ashland City.  Squirrel hunting is my favorite hunting and I use dogs most of the time.

I will put a scope on the rifle.  As far as ammo, I was thinking a subsonic or, if I went with the marlin bolt, shorts.  The reason for the low velocity is that  my shots are  up into the tree when the dogs tree a squirrel.

Granted a 17 m2 is a long range squirrel round but if the ranges are short over the top of dogs as the man says a .22 with subsonics will  do it best. with less noise.

Any of the brand names should be good, I am partial to CZs. I would suggest that you go with sub-sonics or longs, easier to clean and do not leave a lead build up in chamber.

I've got a 981T and really like it.  Have a Simmons .22 Mag 3X9 on it. Real accurate with T22's.  The trigger could use some work as it's rather stiff.  I haven't gotten around to fixing mine yet.  I've got the Rifle Basix trigger, just need to put it in.  But once you get used to the factory trigger it's not too bad.  I've tried CCI Mini-mags and they are all over the place, the same with Remington Shorts.  Going to try subsonics when I can find them cheaper than Bass Pro.

I love 22 rimfires and have a small collection..  The older winchester rifles as long as they are in decent shape will shoot amazingly well.  The Models 57, 67, 68, 69(a), 72(a), 75, 52,,,,etc..  Of the modern rifles the CZ 452 is the most accurate for the money that you can buy.  There are others that occasionally do well but the CZ's are consistant.  The Marlins are cheaper and shoot well but their poor trigger action requires either a good gunsmith or a replacement trigger, more $$$$.  Few autoloaders come with good triggers and most won't allow adjustment to a really nice trigger.  My favorites right now are an old M69A with a grooved receiver, a M52(one of the reproductions) and first string? the CZ 452 Lux.  Mine is an older model LUX with an older weaver 3x9 paralex adjustable scope.  I bought it new along with 2 more for the kids.  Cleaned it and adjusted the pull weight of the trigger.  The stocks are finished with what appears to be some type of lacquer and was replaced with TruOil...  A 6x18 Redfield was used for accuracy testing and with remington subsonic HP's it'll stay under an inch at 100 yards.  At 24 the groups were a hole.. at 50 they were consistantly under 1/2 and most times under 3/8's.  At the time they were $175+/- .  A nice older M69A is also a good choice as is the tube fed variant the M72.  The 72's tend to be a bit cheaper and both usually shoot quite well indeed.  The triggers on these are adjustable for pull weight, without too much problem and in my experience are usually good as is.

For hunting I like an auto. The Marlin 7000 with scope,I sometimes want the quick 2nd shot.I have worked on the trigger and now its very nice, still about 3lbs but no creep, out of the box it seemed you had to pull for a 1/4 inch before it would break. The accuracy is the best I,v seen in an auto.
