MOLES!!!
« on: June 03, 2005, 10:07:09 AM »
We live on the edge of the woods, and the moles are everywhere!  They clean us out of tulips, potatoes, and carrots.  Last week, they even ate some onions!  The traps don't seem to make a diffference.  I hate to poison them, cause my sled dogs dig them out.  Of course, the dogs pass them around, so evryone gets tapeworm whenever anyone catches one!  We haven't been able to keep them down since our mole-hunting cat died.  Anyone have a solution?

From what I've read about Moles so far, two things I am sure of :

If you have Moles, you have good soil.  THat's the good news.  The Mole Hills you see are at the area where the Mole was feeding.  They dig tunnels from their Den to the feeding stations, which is where they find Worms.  A delicacy for a Mole.  While they may eat roots and bulbs, their main attraction is worms and grubs.

And.....the safest way to get rid of them is to trap them.  With Pet animals in or around the house, poison or lawn treatment almost isn't an option.

My cat had a Litter of Kittens 3 weeks ago.  I don't know how effective she or the little ones are at catching Moles but I don't have many in my yard.  I can only remember just a few times when she came home with a Mole for a snack.  Earlier this week I looked in her box and she had a Baby Bunny in there with her and the kittens.  There was the Bunny, laying between two kittens nuzzling the mama cat.  Motherly instincts I guess.

One other thing you may want to consider.  A skunk will dig holes in your yard looking for grubs and worms also.  You may have a two tiered attack going on in your yard.  Moles and Skunks.
If you want to run with the Wolves, you can't Pee with the Puppies.

I thought it was the moles eating all my wifes bulbs and such till I caught the culprit red handed.... TREE RAT....
Declared war on the tree rats and the bulbs and such stopped dissapearing.
I also had problem with Voles... blasted things ate a whole row of sweet potatoes...good cat took care of that problem
Mice will also  wreek havoc on root crops /  bulbs

When I was a kid we had a dachshund (standard not the toy) that actively hunted moles, dug 'em up, killed 'em & ate 'em. We weren't bothered by moles very often!
