Ruger 22/45 vs. Walther P-22

Dali Llama say he contemplating possible purchase of Ruger 22/45 or Walther P-22.  Dali say he would appreciate others' thoughts and experiences regarding the quality, handling, dependability, reliability, ease of cleaning, and accuracy of these two firearms.  Dali say that general observations on relative desirability of these weapons or referral to other sources of information also be greatly appreciated. :-)

Can't speak to the Walther, but I have a 6" 22/45 that I have had for several years. Has adjustable sights and heavy barrel. Accurate enough for me with just about any ammo, totally dependable (may have had a fft, but can't remember it). FTF very rarely and I attribute that to ammo. A little pain to disassemble and reassemble, but that is my only complaint. Would buy another in a heartbeat. Would probably buy 4" if doing again.

Why a 4" instead of longer barrel, ask Dali Llama? :?

Just a fan of the shorter barrels on any of my pistols and revolvers. Wanted the 4" when I picked up the 6" but wasn't one available around here and had the money in my pocket. Certainly would not get rid of this one to get the 4".  I also have one of the Anniversary Edition "Mark 1", but it is not nearly as accurate as the 22/45.

I would recommend the Ruger. 100% forget free with mine, possibly 12,000 rounds fired.  The take down is not so difficult, just do it a couple of times and you won't forget how. It's EASY!   I like the 6 inch barrel but thats just me.

It still shoots better than I do. Take a long look at the new MkIII adjustable sights drilled and taped for scope and has the mag release on the grip like the 22/45

They are not even in the same class as far as accuracy is concerned.  Buy the ruger if you want to hit anything.

:cb2: Hey Dali! Good to hear from you. I'm not really a big fan of either gun, and I know that puts me in a very small minority that doesn't like the Ruger. However, between the two I'd have to pick the Ruger over the Walther. When I looked at the Walther one day, my local dealer warned me not to get it. Look and feels great, but he said that had a boatload of problems with them, and most of his customers who shot a lot came back with complaints. Now this was several years ago when they first came out, and I haven't kept up with them. Walther may have addressed the initial problems, and it may be an excellent gun today, but then again . . . .

I bought a Walther P-22 a while back.  I am used to the quality of the PPK series.  What a let down.  I sold it shortly thereafter and found a PP in 22LR.  I would definitely get the Ruger over the P-22.

I have a 22/45 and would recommend it.  The new ones look and feel just a little better. The 22/45 is about as competent as my BUCKMARK. P-22 don't have and don't know about. :-)

Sorry being late to answer just go to RUGER and check them out. Slight differences but make a difference for the better. Just maybe my own opion  Although I like the one I have the new one is just a little more pleasing to handle . It's just me I guess. :-)

« Reply #15 on: April 24, 2005, 07:55:26 AM »
Purchased a p22 this winter and am having a couple problems. It is a nice looking , light compact pistol but mine is going back and if not fixed properly,, well down the road.. The safety is on the slide and when the slide cycles a bystander can easily watch the safety lever moving around until it goes to safe and shooting stops. all that holds the safety in place is a drilled indent in the frame and a spring loaded ball. Also ,, it frequently misfires. most of the time pull the trigger once more and it will work. It seems to get worse as the gun gets used. It also seems to function better if you just shoot it as fast as you can instead of going for acuracy. Going to the factory Monday.. Fed ex will pick it up and bill walther.. or so they(walther) says. Another annoying thing is all the writing and symbols on the thing. Hell take it in the bath room for some reading material. I have the .22/45 to somewhat match my 1911. I am going to get another target Mark III, The walther has not proved to be as accurate as the 22/45 . The barrel setup on the walther is strange as the rifling is a thin tube inside the smooth bore of the barrel. This is my first walther. I would certailny be easy to replace the rifling if needed.

I love how peoples lack of shooting is taken out on the firearm its self.

I was playing around some months back and I had my P22 on me that day in the woods. So on the way home I stopped of at the range. I ran though the GSSF Glock match program with it. I do it all the time, it is a good program. Basicly it is, 50 total rounds at, 12, 20, 50, 70 feet. Not in that order, you are timed 15 secs. per 10 rounds. Bullseye is 10 points, 50 bulls eyes=500 best score. Well I got a 500 first try. And with the P22 I have also made it in the one-hole club with. I have done it with a few guns and the P22 is one of them. That is 10 though a bulls-eye at 79 feet.

My Walther is the 5'inch bbl. . No mods at all. I did it in "out of the box" form. I guess Im rare.  8)  Well, maybe not. I have seen 3 or 4 people do that to with there P22. They are friends of mine ages 20-48.

No flames.

I was just pointing out that with every bad opinion, there is a good one. I was not saying any one thats using this forum is a bad shooter. Some times people make comments and they lack the time of hands on with the gun they are talking about. Once again I do not mean any one here. This is just MHO.

It all comes down to "what is good shooting"

WHAT IS GOOD SHOOTING?

To some people good shooting is hitting the target, to others good shooting is hitting from the 8 ring in. To others good shooting is grouping, dont matter where just grouping. And last, to some, good shooting is hitting the red bulls eye every time.

So to make a comment like "If you want to hit anything". What does that mean? You will not hit any thing ever? Or at 20 feet, 50 feet? Or does it mean you will not hit the bulls eye every time? Fast shooting or slow? Moving target or still?

I think with time and practice, you can push a gun pretty far. And, yes of course, some guns are more friendly then others.

But, to me good shooting is hitting the bulls eye every time. And every time I go out, I push my self harder and hared to hit it every time. Some times it takes time.

Was the P22 made to be a nail driver? No. But, with some time I was able to get a pretty good opinion about the weapon.

Was the Ruger made to be a better driver. IMHO yes. I think, like noted before it is a more "user friendly" gun.

I have had my P22 for about 7 months and have had only minor jams and a hand full of miss fires. I have put about 2000 rounds though it. IMHO it is picky about AMMO, so I say with CCI High vel. 00031.

The 00031 is hollow points and the 00030 is FMJ. I still find that the 00031 is a bit better for hitting the center of the bulls eye.

So these are only MHO. And individual results may very.

I've had both and kept the Ruger. the only problem I have is the Ruger will not cycle target ammo. I can shoot Wildcat all day long because it's a pretty hot load but Eley, nope. I have around 3,000 rounds through the gun so it should be broken in.

I own the 22/45 and two friends of mine each have the p/22 with the 3.5 in barrel (thats a loud sucker). I like both guns, however, the ruger would be my favorite, maybe because I own one and can shoot it better. I will say that we have shot thousands of rounds through both types of pistols and have never had a problem with either one. I think that the Walther's are great guns. Also, when holding them, the ruger seems heavier, could be why I have more control over it. who knows

I shoot a Ruger Mk1 7" tapered target barrel, and a Mk2 5.5" bull target barrel. The Mk2 is the gun, while both are accurate, the 5.5 is a lot more steady to shoot off hand. You should do some research before looking at the Mk3. Its possible to find Mk2 in the shops NIB for around $325.

Of the two choices presented, I'd recommend the Ruger over the Walther.  For about the same price of the 22/45, you should be able to pick up a nice used Mk II (with steel frame), which I'd give a higher recommendation on.

My Ruger 22/45 was the standard model with a heavy 5.5" barrel.  Shot great....accurate and reliable.  What turned me off to the Ruger was the slop from barrel/action to receiver.  After a few takedowns, the barrel assembly would rotate slightly within the receiver.  Not really a factor since the sights are anchored to the barrel assembly, just didn't care for the loosening fit.  When you mix metal and plastic......metal wins!

The Walther P22 was the "Blau Grau" edition with both barrels.  I bought this pistol for its weight and grip size.  Intention: first pistol for my boys to shoot.  Quickly realized that they did not understand the fact that the off-hand thumb does not go behind the slide.  No one was injured, but my stress level was staying too high as I continuously corrected there thumb location.....frequently within a string of shooting.  As far as the quality of the Walther....I really had no problems with it.  Functioned well, but not as reliable as the Ruger.  The accuracy was mediocre at best.  Even with the long barrel installed, I was luck to keep 3"-4" groups at 10-15yards.  (Qualifier for my accuracy assessment: My Colt 1991 45 will print <2" groups at the same distance).  It does have a fun factor thanks to its light weight, small grip, etc.

By the way, for my youth shooters, I switched to a Colt Frontier Scout in 22.  The Ruger Bearcat was in consideration, but the Scout popped up at a very attractive price.

Another candidate may be the Browning Buckmark.  I owned a Target Model that I sold......during an unfortunate break into stupidity.  The Standard and Camper models are in the same price range.  My preferrd copper washed bullets, but was very accurate.

O Great Dali,

Travel down the same path as many of us and get the Ruger, it has served me for many years and is flawless.....It eats what I feel it, shoots straight and never wants for anything......An occasional cleaning with a rub down it all it asks......Take him into the woods and varmits will fall at your feet......   :D

Have fun.............

my sisters boyfriend bought a walther p22 for hsi first pistol..we have shot that thing a ton!  it only likes cci mini mags....don;t know why but anything else jams...we had 20 different boxes of ammo on the table and the cci minimags are about the only ones that shot...secondly the spent casings on his eject right back into our faces...may be a problem with his gun specifically..not sure it's the only one i ever shot...then to top it all off when we got home and were cleaning our pistols...i had my glock and my browning buckmark tore down cleaned and reassembled before he got his p22 done..and i am a picky cleaner!..putting it back together looks like a total pain..a guide tool and lining up springs and well it just looked like a mess
