Author Topic: BBs rolling out of my gun prior to firing /= (Read 927 times)

i have been firing an old Benjamin Franklin air rifle, .17 cal, T9772 (the only markings on it are "Benjamin Franklin Made in USA T9772)
open sites, pump from under the barrel (rotates on a bolt near the front of teh barrel... sorry i don't know the right term). This thing is probably 25 yrs old +. it firse fairly accurate for its age and stuff, but fairly often, when shooting at a downward angle, the BBs will roll out of the barrel before i can fire. sometimes turning the safety off will send them rolling, sometimes they roll with it on, sometimes they stay in if i put the safety on at different times or if i pump at different times (like after/before loading etc.)

basically its completely random when this happens.

anyone have a quick and painless remedy for this, or should i just live w/it / get a new gun.

first of all, its either a Benjamin 340 or 347. It was made in 1971. It should have a model number on the rear tube plug. If a bb rolls out of the barrel, thats because the gun isn't meant to shoot steel bbs. It has a brass barrel, and if you've been shooting steel bbs through it the barrel is probably ruined. If its a 340, its a smoothbore gun intended to shoot bb caliber round lead shot or .177 lead pellets. If its a 347, its got (or had) a rifled barrel intended to fire .177 cal lead pellets. Steel bbs chew up brass barrels pretty quickly, and rifled brass barrels even quicker. A steel bb will roll right out of a .177 barrel, and I'm betting that the gun is a 347.

You are correct, that gun should not shoot BB's.....I had one when I was a kid.......177 pellets only.

ha ur both wrong! (and im a dumbass lol) no markings on the end indicating model, but i did find (hidden by dirt and stuff) "cal 22 model 342". now i don't have any 22 pellets to try w/it, but the bolt doesnt really look like it would hold them very evenly... its hollow in the middle like it was meant to hold a round object. would this be for BBs?

Well that would explain why the .175 cal bbs were rolling out of the .22 barrel. They are way to small. Still, you don't shoot bbs from a brass Benji rifle, period. The 342 is not a bb gun. The bolt isn't meant to hold the pellet. It just pushes it into the barrel. The hole in the end of the bolt has nothing to do with holding bbs, you don't fire .175 bbs from a .22 brass barreled Benjamin rifle, right? The bolt is hollow. Theres a hole in the bottom of the bolt that lines up with a port in the top of the valve when the bolt is closed. This creates a passageway from the valve to the breech through which the compressed air travels when the gun is fired.

Dave didn't leave much else to add except to try using some .22 cla. pellets before giving up on it. Lawdog

ya i definately will... i have nothing to lose anyway. can't believe i didn't look around for markings on it better.

even if it does still suck, i can use the pellets for a new air gun if/when i get one.

The Benjamin I had was a very nice rifle......I bought my son one in .22 cal back in the 80's........My son came in this week and has been shooting the tf99..........but still talks about how much he liked the Benjamin.......don't know what happened to either of them.........

It's worth the cost of a box or tin of pellets to find out.
