Eagle Crossbows
« on: September 07, 2005, 10:56:36 AM »
I realize that most here  are real high on the Excalibur bows but I still haven't got my permit yet but have a hankerin to try a crossbow.

The current Sportsmen's Guide Hunting catalog has several Xbows.  They have some Eagle recurves that look interesting.  One is 150 lp. pull with a listed 270 FPS for $89.97 and a 180 lp at 285 FPS for #109.97/  They also have a Horton Steelforce recurve for $109 and a Barnett Revolution compound for $229.97.

I realize you get what you pay for but does anyone have any experience with any of these bows?

I'm notr familiar with that brand name, however, I understand that there are a number of crossbows made in China, and marketed under various names.  The concensus seems to be that these bows are cr*p.  No first hand personal experience though.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

Your right about getting whatyou pay for. The really cheap bows will have no accuracy past 10 yards usually, and terrible triggers. You will be disapointed with the low end Barnetts, they have a real heavy trigger, about 8 12 lb pull. I had a Steel force that the limbs cracked twice in the first year and the trigger fell apart. The Revelution I haven't owed, I bought an Excalibur Wolverine before I got any thing else and have stuck to Excaliburs since and own 3 Vixens and 2 Paradoxs now and couldn't be happier.
I am an Excalibur fan and shooter. Try Dan Miller at

He may have a used Excal, but a new 150 lb Vixen are just over $300 new. And its 285 fps, a 3lb trigger and don't shoot at the same bull twice in a row.

That bow is a chinese one. I have one that some one gave me. I have not shot it yet so I cannot tell you if they work well or not. Digger gave some good advice get a better exbow. I do not mind my cheaper Barnett Ranger I killed two deer with it so far but Digger is right the triggers could be better.  Still for a cheaper xbow I think it works fine. A lot of folks are down on Barnetts in this country and Canada yet in England they are number 1 of course that could be because they make them there too along with in the States.  If you are going to buy it for hunting get the best you can afford you will not regret that decision. Them figures for the Chinese bows are way overrated. My 150# Barnett Recurve is rated at 225 fps and a Wildcat which most of these chinese bows copy is at 240. They probably shot a real light arrow to get those figures and did not care if they stressed the bow to get them at a risk of having almost a dryfire. For normal use you would use a lot heavier arrow. If your determined to get one from them get the Barnett Revolution.

Thanks for the replies.  I won't be buying one of them.

I am looking on E-Bay.  Is anyone familiar with the Jennings devastator crossbow?  Mostly just curious.  The seller says you can use regular arows and not bolts on them.

had a Jennings bow and it was crap. Kept breaking the cables due to the stress of the cams and I thik the xbow you are talking about is a older one I would stay away from it. I would look at Excaliber, Ten Point, Parker and I still see nothing wrong with a higher priced Barnett like Rick has. Jennings is now associated with Bear so I doubt if I would go with them either as it was Bear/Jennings that basically told me too bad you should recable every year which is nonsense. My Martin bow is over 10 years old and it has never had the cable replaced. If a Company is not going to stand by its products then I stay away from them. I even had the guy who owned the store disgusted with Bear/Jennings on this issue.
