Author Topic: Just got a Rem 760 (Read 1203 times)

Hello everyone I just inherited a Rem Model 760 30-06. I know this gun was well taken care of and never went in the gun cabinet uncleaned ever.
I don't know much about these guns. I went to Remington web site to find a manual but I couldn't find one. The gun looks well made and taken care of. This is my first Remington, I have Nef,savage and 2 custom rifles. The more I touch this rifle the more I like it. My uncle has gotten quite a few deer with it over the years and he dose not hunt anymore. It has a 2x7 redfield scope on it. Do any of you reload for this type of rifle? I am guessing a 150 factory load should work ok. Are these guns pretty accurate?(I am betting they are) :-) By looking at the serial number the gun was made between 1979 and 1981. Thank you for your time.

I loaded 54.5gr IMR 4350 under a 165gr Core-Lokt for years. It was accurate and did a great job on deer. My son mow has the rifle.

I have a Remington 760 Carbine in 30-06. For deer I load it back a little, shooting a 180 grain ballistic tip over 47.2 grains of IMR 4320. this produces 2470 fps and bang/flop results on whitetails. For moose I boosted the load to 48.5 grains and 2630 fps.

The age of Remington firearms is normally determined by a two letter code on the left side of the barrel, just ahead of the receiver. If you want, you can look up this code and post it here, and I'll give you the month and year of manufacture.

I own a new 7600 in 308 and like it fine. I have shot a few of the Rem. pumps and found most will hold around 1.5 - 2 inch groups. You have to remember these are hunting rifles, not target rifles. As far as reloads you will find that some of your reloads will chamber fine and others may not. Bolt action rifles have a much stronger camming action. Enjoy it.

Congratulations on the family heirloom.........here is a link to the 7600....not much difference between the 2.....the locking lugs on the bolt is the biggest difference between the 760 and the 7600...... http://www.remington.com/pdfs/om/om_7600.pdf

I've not owned a slide action, but continuously read good things about the 760 and 7600. Most owners report great accuracy and very good reliability with the slide action Remington.......

While I'm sure the gun means a lot to you now, the sentimental value will continue to increase over time.........I haven't got many guns from relatives, but the ones I get will never leave..........I still hunt with most of them, and sitting quietly in the woods, with my fathers shotgun brings back good memories every time......

Rick, I will get those letters to you (am away from home now) and perhaps post a pic of the rifle. Since my uncle don't hunt anymore I figured I better use it and get a deer with it since he put a smile on my face I should put one on his. I will never sell it either you guys are right about that. I will also let you guys know how it shoots.

I just saw where Jeff has posted up the letter codes on the Remington forum. You may want to look in on it.

I guess I should go there more often.
