222 Remington Mag Ackley Improved?
« on: June 09, 2005, 06:00:15 AM »
Is anyone shooting the 222 Rem Mag Imp?  I have heard that this is available for Contender.....but would also like to hear about it if you are shooting it in a bolt rifle too.  I am thinking of sending mu 223 Carbine to get rechambered.
....make it count

I have a 17 inch Hart SS 1-7 twist 222 Rem Mag Imp.  in a Contender.  It is a step-up barrel.  using W-760 (670? got my numbers turned around at the moment) With CCI Small rifle Mag. primers, with 80 grain SMK's.   Groups at 600 yards and @ 1k were real good. The shooting I'm referring to, took place a couple of weekends ago.  Used a Bower Rest Sytem and was shooting off of a portable benchrest (not totally solid).  The hits at 1000 yards are hard to see, but they are on the right side of the target from 3 O'clock down to 6 O'clock.  Marc Sheehan was doing the shooting.
in actuality there are two groups since I had him run some clicks up as he was hitting at the very top edge of the target below.  With that in mind this is some real good shooting @ LR with a Contender (Used a 10x Burris IER scope).  Contender also has a had a trigger job done on it.   This is one of the flatest shooting Cartridges in a Contender for LR shooting.

Is that a "stubbed" barrel?  What do you have your trigger pull set at?

No, it is not a stubbed barrel.  Oh, you got me on the trigger pull, but it sure is nice.  Guesstimate is in the 1lb area-very smooth.   Marc liked the trigger pull so much he was going to send off a couple of his to get worked on.

FWIW--My 11 year old shot his first groups at 1k on the same day with a 6.5-284 MOA Maximum using the BRS.  You can tell in this pic also that he ran some clicks up to be more centered.

The BRS does an excellent job at keeping a very small vertical group.
His first group was a 3-shot group, then after clicks were run up, there is four more shots with two of them in the red.
