scope settings
« on: June 09, 2005, 06:37:21 AM »
I have been experimenting with a lot more cant on my scope to keep my head up. My question is this!!!!! How much scope adjustment will it take from chicken to rams ( SB and HP) with windage, shooting significant scope cant??? Because the center line of the bore is not directly under the center of the scope!!! I am not sure but I am thinking that it would be enough of an adjustment to make a difference....

normally about 8 minutes from chickens to rams is adequate.

i've shot with a significant cant for a number of years and found no appreciable windage corrections necessary.  with the chin guns you definitely needed to go over as you went up but our scopes aren't high enough above the rifle to make that much of a difference.

Best course...

The best course of action is obviously to sight it in on a calm day. This is assuming your are going to rotate the scope so that you shoot with the crosshairs plum to the world. When you do this, the only variable is the actual offset. If you can measure the offset, then it's simply a linear relationship. If the scope ends up being 1/2" left (assuming a RH position) and the rifle is zeroed at 40 meters, this would be the relationship:
Code: [Select]
       POI
Meters  Inches  Clicks  (% Offset)
 40       0.00     0        0.0%
 60       0.25     1       50.0%
 77       0.46     2       92.5%
100       0.75     3      150.0%

Impact would be left, needing right clicks (calculated at 4 per minute). I would say 1/2" is an exageration, but who knows. See Dave's reply above!

We didn't address the other cant error....

We didn't talk about cant that wasn't consistent, or planned. In this case the height of the scope is irrelevant. The influence is the amount of cant and the bullet drop. Here is a link to a very interesting experiment and explanation.
