.284 Winchester, Opinions?
« on: June 07, 2005, 11:12:26 AM »
I have a M48 mauser action that I'm thinking of chambering in .284. Whats your opinions on this cartridge/action choice?

I know the 7x57 is a good choice but I kinda like to be just a little diffrent if I can. A couple hundred FPS more might not hurt neigther. 8)

I really like the .284 Winchester cartridge although it isn't any better than a 7mm-08 which is more popular.  My only problem is the standard length action of the M48 is better suited for cartridges with a length of 3.250" as compared to the .284 which has a length of 2.80".  Your going to have to have the magazine blocked to get proper feeding.  If it were me I would look for a short action laying around to build a .284 on.  Lawdog

The M48 is a intermediate action, .30-06 based stuff don't fit. I've gotta keep OAL under 3.21 or they won't go in the mag well. 8)

:?  Is brass for the .284 still being produced?  That might be a consideration.

Winchester still makes brass and loaded ammo midway carries both. 8)

The .284 Winchester at 2.8" COAL is a dog.  Many long ogive .284" bullets won't work when limited to that length.  It will really shine in your M48 seating those bullets out to 3.1"+.  I would also put a 24" barrel on it and maybe open up the throat a little to take advantage of the longer COAL.

A .280 with a different shape. If you like it, there ain't no sense in a short action crampin' it up. Your Mauser sounds about right Maybe a Mexican or Brazilian would be a bit better but not much.  :D

Esox is right on target.
You will never regret owning a .284 Win. It is better than the 7-08 and the .280 (though both are great).
If you want something a little more different---------look at a 6.5-284.  Just size down .284 brass and go for it.  My current pet loads are the 160 Partition in the .284 that is an elk thumper, and 130 TSX in the 6.5-284 that is good for about anything. Both are in long (30-06 class) actions.

The 6.5 looks good too but I really like thr bullet selection in 7MM, A 24 or 26 inch bull barrel is definatly in the cards This will mostly be a paper puncher @ 300+ Thanks for the replies, I think this one will be started soon. 8)

Hey Lowertroll...
The Quote you have in your post is one word off....

If I remember correctly flavor was mis-spelled...... :-)

Wish the 280 Remington were more popular! because it slightly outperforms the 270 Winchester that only caught on when introduced a few years ahead of the 280 Remington.

Had the 280 come to light before the 270, it would have become much more popular and the 7mm Mag MIGHT have struggled like the 284 Win has.
