Blond Bears
« on: April 07, 2005, 06:14:11 PM »
Are there a lot of blond bears in southern Utah?  I saw one with a friend while on a day hike last summer.  At least I think it was a bear; it was about a half hour before dark when something on its hind legs walked off in the woods about thirty yards away, making as much noise as possible.  I only got a glimpse, but it was definitely a blond creature walking on its hind legs.  The light was at the point where we could see shapes and colors but not details.

We figured it was either a blond bear, a sasquatch, or a naked, hairy hermit intent on keeping us away from his territory.

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I don't know a lot about black bear color variations.

The color of the Black Bear over its entire range varies from jet black to white. A very rare white or creamy phase occurs on Kermode Island and vicinity in British Columbia.  The most common color is black with brown or cinnamon also quite common.  Black bears may have a patch of white hair on the fronts of their chests with the snout area usually brown in color.  The lighter colored bears are usually prized as thropies.  Lawdog

Thanks for the info!  Maybe I'll try to get a bear tag for that area.

Kermode is what the white black bears are called.  I don't know of a Kermode Island, but I could be wrong.

A quote from a website about Kermode bears...

Quote
lso known as the Kermode bear, after Frank Kermode, former director of the Royal British Columbia Museum, this bear is a genetic abnormality, but not an albino. Where an albino would have a white nose and light-colored eyes, a Kermode bear has a brown nose and eyes.

Eddie, bears in the wild don't make a habit of walking on their back legs upright like a man. They also do not make allot of noise, you really seldom hear them at all. I believe what you saw was a yeti. I would love to see one, as they are quite rare and sightings are far and few between. How large was the foot print and approximately how deep was the depression of that print. For the record, the blonde color yetis are much rarer than the dark color ones.

Wow!  A yeti all the way from Nepal!

To be honest, I didn't stick around to look at the print.  The dark was coming on, and I figured whatever was making all that racket wanted me to leave, so I left, as all I had was my trusty Gerber Gator.

Hay watch out guys!  It could be someone (varmit hunter) in one of those new Chillie suites Cabela's is selling.  I'd hate for the Blond Bear, or Yetti, to turn out to be someone's Husband, Brother, Son, Wife, Sister, or Daughter.  Be careful!

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Y'know, that crossed my mind as I got back to camp and out of danger.  My friends and I used to wear a jedi-type robe and scare people at night for pranks (mostly scared ourselves; gotta love being a teenager.)  Only thing is, we were miles and miles away from anything, and nobody goes down that trail.  We knew there were bears around; some brilliant Boy Scouts had buried some beef stew in their campsite.

That's a pretty wild area, too.  The year before I hiked the same trail alone (I was being a thinker, I know).  On the way back I noticed some large cougar tracks that hadn't been there on the way up.  Ah, the sweet feeling of sweat dripping down one's back.  A mile from camp, a turkey gobbled right behind me.  Thing is, I didn't stop to think about what made that loud noise, I just knew I'd better get the heck out of Dodge before I was eaten.  Ever sprint for a half mile at 9,000 feet?
