44mag encore 12"

Hey all,

Made it out to the range today.   Just mounted my Leupold 4X scope atop the 12" 44mag barrel..     All I can say Is WOW..  :-D

After getting it sighted in .   I shot three groups of three @ 75 yards .   All  three  Groups had the holes touching each other...   I couldn't believe it .     I was shooting 300gr XTP Hornady Custom ammo..

Does anyone have a load using 2400 powder.  For the 300Gr. XTP ???

Thanks for all the Help and Good advice, everyone has given so far. With out you all, I would  be Lost..
 :-D

I made up some 300 grain XTP loads using 15 grains of 2400 and they shot very well out of my 12 inch Encore.  I keep wondering whether to shoot these or the 240 grainers.

Knowing everything will be at 100 yards or less, a guy could easily get to know his trajectories.  Bullet drop really comes into play only in the 70 - 100 ranges.

Just got my new Shooting Chrony and sometime this week will know the velocity out of the barrel.

Will let you know more then.

With the loads I described above, it isn't much more than a .45.  Made a big difference when I changed to the rubber grip and forend as opposed to the wood.  May have to go and try the wood again now that I am used to it.

Finally made it to the range with the new chrony.  18 grains of 2400 behind the 240 gr. XTP was consistently posting 1440 fps out of the 12 inch Encore barrel.

300 XTPs loaded with 15 grains of 2400 were moving at 1150 through the chrony.

The 240 load is very manageable for me and a bit faster than I thought it might be.  I expected 1300-1400.

I also really like how gently the 300 grain XTP load shoots at this load.  With these velocities, and the information I have learned here on GBO, I think I now have two very manageable hunting loads.

With my 44MAG contender 10 inch barrel, I use 17.5 gr. of 2400 with the Hornady 300 gr. XTP's. Very accurate and a powerful load. And with my 240 gr. Hornady bullets I use 20 gr. of 2400. Both very stout loads.  :D

I load Win. 296 in all of my high power loads. I`ve gotten good accuracy in all of the guns it`s been my loads have been shot in and it give you the highest velosity for presure of any powder on the market. I would also recomand 240 gn. bullets for deer. The deer will not know the difference, but the 240`s will shoot alot flatter. The 300`s would be better for hogs and thicker skinned game.

Having recently aquired a 12"SS 44 mag on Eb@y, I enjoyed reading this post. I have yet to shoot it though, but plan to on Thursday when I go to the range for quals. I have some loads of 20.5gr of 2400 pushing 240gr SWC w/ GC that I developed for the 10" Contender. I'm looking forward to playing around with this one.  I've always liked the 44Mag eversince I got my first Dirty Harry Special back in the late 70's.

Whew, finally a sunny hot day and the bugs were out in force!. Shot the new 44 Encore after quals, only a few rounds though. Can't really say how accurate the loads were. It was standing unsupported at 25 yards and the targets were already full of holes.
