TC ENCORE IN .308 OR .270
« on: October 16, 2005, 04:39:45 PM »
I've just about made up my mind to get a TC Enore in either .308 win or .270 for Whitetail Hunting in Texas Hill Country. Shots anywhere from <100 yds out to 300+

Does anyone know if either caliber is better suited than the other to the Encore system? Alot of people on this forum seem to be partial to certain calibers, and neither the .308 nor the .270 appear to be among them.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Encore in these calibers, and how well they performed. I'm really partial to the .308, but I like the flatter trajectory of the .270.

I have the 24 inch .270 barrel and like the way it shoots off the Encore frame.  I took a NM antelope with it at 250 yards and know it will do more than I can.

I have no experience with the .308.

I would really like to get sub .5", 5 round groups at 100 yds.

My dad's Remington .308(which I've been hunting with for over 10 yrs) did that as the rule, not the exception.  I'm really looking for that.  Also, I've never had a deer run on me after shooting it with that rifle. Granted that's more to the credit of the round than the rifle. 150 gr CoreLokt Soft pt remingtons.

Flip side of that, my dad hunted for 5-6 years with a Remington .270 that, produced consistent sub 1" groups. But my dad had a horrible time with deer running after being shot with the .270.

I guess I'm already kind of biased. But I'm wondering what other people's experiences have found.

I don't know about these calibers in relation to an Encore, but if you are partial to the .308, that's what I'd go with.  At the ranges you listed, there is not that much of an advantage to the .270.  Plus, if you do decide to use the rifle for other than whitetails, IMO the .308 is somewhat more versatile.

Good Luck.
