Please forgive my ignorance, I am more of a shotgun guy than rifle or pistol.

I will be picking up a Star BM pistol soon. I always inspect the rifling on older guns to make sure the barrel is not shot out. The barrel was clean and I did see rifling, but it did not seem deep to me. I have never seen a "shot out" barrel so I am not sure what to look for. Just wondering how deep rifling should be. I know it is hard to comment without seeing it, but any thoughts would be appreciated. Gun is in good shape, I will be doing some re-blueing on it with Oxpho.

A "shot out" barrel is kind of a misnomer. Most barrel wear occurs at the throat just in front of the chamber for about the first inch. This is errosian caused by the super heated gas propellant. The other place that wears is at the muzzle from cleaning rod wear. Pitting or rust pits that will cause problems should be visible to the eye. Many modern rifles have shallow rifling.

zrifleman is exactly right.. Don't worry.. It's rare indeed to fire any weapon enough to totally erase the rifling.. and throat erosion in a 9mm is not a common occurance..
