I know if I looked hard enough in the forum I would find the answers to my questions but maybe not is the same context so.I am thinking about getting a single six in 45LC 51/2 barrel and was looking for comments on what is preferred and why. It will be used for fun and maybe a little cowboy action shooting but just wanted one. The six guns I have looked at so far are the Uberti 1873 Single Action Cattlemen, Beretta Stampede, New Ruger Vaquero and the Cimarron Evil Roy. The Cimarrons action was very-very smooth but not sure if it makes it worth $300 bucks more.

So please let me here your thoughts.

I recommend the Ruger.

Reasons:
1. You don't hurt collectors status by shooting it (unlike a Colt).
2. Made in USA (Unlike most affordable Colt clones).
3. Good service from the company if needed.
4. Easy to tune up yourself (Spring Kit).
5. Durable.
6. Affordable.

Excellent advice, have a half dozen or so Ruger SAs and never had any problem with any of them.

I recomend the Stampede or an old Vaquero.

You asked my preference and why. Of the one's you offered I'd go with the Cattlemen for the following reasons.

1. My application of a single six is Cowboy Action Shooting. What works for me is to be as authentic as my budget allows. The New Ruger and Stampede both have a transfer bar and a firing pin mounted in the frame. That rules them out immediately.

2. I tweak my guns to my preference. I don't want a gun that's been set up to another persons preferences and I'm not going to pay extra for stuff that may need to be undone. That rules out the Evil Roy. The Cattlemen is a fine replica that I can tweak to my specs. I may spend the $300 on springs and work, but it will be done to my specs and it will be done after I determine what I want / need done.

What is the application you will use it for?

Does a frame mounted firing pin bother you? If not then I will add an endorsement for the Old Ruger. They are a tank that your grandchildren will shoot long after your gone. The Old Rugers do have LARGE grips. (Another reason I got rid of mine.) I have since discovered the Eagle Gunfigher grips make the old Vaqueros VERY easy for my short fingers to grab. I have no experience with the New Rugers.

Stoney Pete, I take it that you have the Uberti Cattlemen. I did want to go authentic but wasn't sure of the durability of the Cattleman. As far as the application just mostly old west can plunking and quick draw fun on a target. Hopefully some day will start going to cowboy shoots but right now just for plunken. But I must note that I am particular on making sure the gun is of quality, reliability and safe. Now with Cattleman, can you load all six rounds or is it best to keep with five? Also, the budget is flexible so if there is another piece you would recommend, please do as all my experience is with modern arms.

Actually mine are Cimarron Model P's in .44-40. They are the same as the Uberti cattleman and also made by Uberti.

Most of the Uberti 6 guns are good guns. For plinking as your considering they would be fine and last for a long time stock. You may consider a Wolff spring kit, but I always say shoot it first.

As with any manufacturer of any product, you can get lemons. I have been very satisfied with my Uberti's. Your milage may vary. I will say this. Do not buy what other's say you should have. Buy what you want the first time. Then you won't lose money when you go buy it later, after you have spent money on the wrong thing.

You should only load five with hammer down on empty chamber. If not the firing pin is resting on the primer. One bump and it can be BAD. :shock: SASS, NCOWS, and all other "cowboy" organizations require and empty chaimber under the hammer. Because of the tranfer bar system non three screw Ruger's can be carried with six. However my mentor taught me long ago to apply the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) Principle and carry all single sixs with an empty chamber under the hammer. That way I won't screw up and shoot myself.

If you have $$ and can spend more the USFA's are made in CT USA under the old Colt dome. These are exact copies of orginal '73 and some say better than the originals. They're outta my price range.
