« on: July 01, 2005, 10:24:10 AM »
Am lookin for a gun -for move to Alaska, am huge 308 fan - first rifle Win M70 in 308 with 2x7 redfield, got 2 mod 100's in 308,have thought of rebarrel one to 358, SMLE jungle carbine 308, Mauser 98 in 308, Swede in 308..I am a practical person, too much so sometimes, my thoughts being if in need of brass just neck up the 308's..Have unloaded 7mm rem mag and a 338 win..Have considered the 35 whelan - hard to find..Any thoughtsand or suggestion would be fine...Had a BLR in 358 took a fine elk with it in Idaho but sold it due to work yrs back..

It sounds like you are a real short case lover. Nothing wrong with the 308 case, or the 358 for that matter. However, if you are looking for affordable power in a 35, the Whelen is the way to go. Cases can be easily made from 30-'06 brass if you want, and it will out perform the smaller cased 358. I really like the Whelen and wouldn't want to be without one in my gunrack. 8)

My vote goes with the .35 Whelen.  Nice to have that extra power just in case.  Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.  Lawdog

If restricted to choosing the .358 and .35 whelen I would go with the whelen for no reason other than it will handle the heavier bullets (225gr, 250 gr) better than the .358.

You may wish to post this on the Alaskan forum.  Those guys could give you a better idea of what you need for an Alaskan rifle than I can.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
John

.358 Win or .35 Whelen??? Just about the same as asking ".308 Win. or .30-06", ain't it? :)
