I have been toying with the idea of re-working one of my handi,s to 8mm mauser . for some reason i just like this cartridge.

1)  how hard would it be to convert

2)  what. cal. brl. would be best for this conversion

any input would be very helpful

I would start with a 223. Doesn't matter how metel they have to bore out, and it already has the rimless extractor. And you might find that the 8x57 reamer would fail to clean out the 308 chamber (at the shoulder), just like the 7x57 reamer fails to clean out the 7mm-08 chamber (at the shoulder). If in doubt, drop a dime to a gunsmith. They can give you the right answer for sure.

Let us know if you do the 8X57.  It is an underrated cartridge, IMO.  I'd even go so far as to say superiour to the 30/06 when handloaded!

Longcruise,

Thats interesting, I have an 8 x57 mauser (Mil surplus like new) and I like it. Do you know if  H&R ever made a 8x57? Seems like alot of info on the net about that caliber. Must of been pretty popular at one time.

Norse.

I'm sure they never made one.  It is more popular in Europe, I think, just because of it's military histroy there.  Your 8X57 milsurp will probably shoot with anything in the 8X57 class if it has a good bore.  I had two of the Yugo 24/47's but got rid of them without firing a shot (someone did an unauthorixed inventory! :) )  Will probably be shooting a Hakim in 8X57 over the weekend that another family member is picking up.

When you can buy a 24/47, a VZ24 or an M48 for less than $150, then why spend a ton of money reboring a Handi?  Least that's my pov.
