Accuracy of 17 HMR
« on: April 25, 2005, 03:39:22 AM »
Gents and Ladies, I have the 17 HMR and have shot it quite a bit but I could not seem to wring out the accuracy I wanted. I got a good look at the stock, action, and barrel relation. I bed the stock to the barrel and action. The accuracy will now get down into the sub MOA's. Has anyone had the same results. This is my travel, and do all rifle. I shoot a few crows now an again but do not hunt. This 17 HMR is really a slick little rifle. I am now starting work on my Ladies rifle. I caught hell for getting my rifle to shooting before hers. A mans work is never done. Tryit.

I have 2 917s, a 917V and a 917VS, both will consistently shoot .6"-.7" 100yd groups, great rifles once the triggers are "fixed" with RB drop in triggers....If you would like more info on the 17hmr or Marlins specifically, check out the forums at RFC...

My 917vs shoots .7-.8 inch groups at 100 using the Hornady 17 and 20 grain stuff but opens up to about 1.2 with CCI 20 grain. This is a right out of the box rifle with no mods or improvements. In the past, I have had good results bedding the actions and free floating the barrels on my .22s. I probably won't bed the 917 given its current accuracy but will definitely do a trigger fix or change.

My 917VS that I bought only slightly used (less than 50 rounds), shot 1/4
and 3/8" group @ 75yds. Haven't shot paper since. She's gotten two crows
right at 165yds, one with the CCI and one with the Hornady 17gr. It's also
popped off the heads of several dozen squirrels at close to 100yds (all with
Hornady's), and over a hundred starlings with CCI's, Remington's, and
Hornady's. This has all been done with the only modification being the
sear surfaces honed and the spring being replaced with the pen spring on
the original trigger.

This rifle is an absolute "keeper"!

Well - I shot this group Saturday in a 5 to 10 MPH wind.
5 Shots at 100 yards. Course my weapon is the "old" Marlin
17VS..

Very nice group.......don't know what it measures, but I can tell it's a good one with all holes touching........great shooting!
