Hello from an FNG.  Been lurking around here for a few months and figured I'd finally register and maybe partake in some of ya'll discussions.
   Since I did alot of this kind of stuff the WRONG way as a kid, I figured I'd try to find out how to safely enjoy burning powder from ya'll that are "in the know"! :D

Welcome to the board.  :D  Always happy to have somebody join who want's to learn how to do the sport properly and safely.

Sure don't know how they take to BP cannons and mortars in Germany but when you get back to Montana, the sky's the limit. (no pun intended on the state motto)  :grin:

GOVT1911 the FNG (I'm sure that's "Fine New Gentleman").  Welcome!!Good to have you on board.  Now let's get busy and let us know if there is any interest in BLACKPOWDER Mortars and Cannon over there in Krautland. :D

Sounds like a NORMAL childhood.  Most of us have wisened up a bit.

Get the questions rolling - you'll find some GREAT folks here!  What are you doing in Germany - do you get to shoot there any?

Thanks for the warm welcome.  I'm in Germany becuase my uncle, (Uncle Sam) decided that I was having too much fun stateside and needed to drink some fresh German bier!
  I'm an Army MP stationed over here.  Just got back from a year in Baghdad in April, heading back Stateside in March 2006.
    To answer your question about shooting much........NO!!!!  Can't really shoot much or ANY at all here.  US military members are no longer authorized to bring any personally owned weapons here and there is so much red tape to go through (plus almost 18 month wait) to purchase a firearm here it's just not feasable.  That's why I can't wait to get back to the States so I can shoot again.  I shoot alot recrationally and enjoy IDPA and 3 Gun matches.  Can't wait to start shhooting blackpowder cannons/mortars!  Now just gotta pick one up so it's waiting back there for me......

Thank you for your service in and congratulations on your survival of your tour in the sand box.

It's a tough role that you play - the folks you deal with and the situations you've been in.  (I've been a PM in a much friendlier situation.)

Two considerations to guide you.  Availabilty of ammunition and a place to shoot - that means bore diameter and range.  Important considerations.

Tip a dopplebock for me!

When you get back to Montana you won't have any problem finding a place to shoot.   Finding powder can be tough.  Western Powder in Miles City is distributor for GOEX.

The best way to get blackpowder in Montana is to join one of the Blackpowder gun clubs. I was never able to find a place selling it over the counter in Great Falls.  Cut Bank and Havre both have very active Blackpowder gun clubs. There is Blackpowder cartridge rifle shooting going on in Missoula so they must be a club or source in that area.

Don't know about the rest of the state.

  I never had a problem buying BP when I was younger.  (wow, was that REALLY 16 years ago???!)  I just headed over to Montana Outdoor Sports or Capital Sports in Helena and picked up a couple pounds at a time.  I used to spend some time making loud noises around Missoula too, don't remember having a hard time finding powder, but that was a long time ago...
