Just booked a hunt ???
« on: February 02, 2003, 07:54:07 AM »
:-) I just booked a hund for the first part of May. I will be hunting in Temple ranch. I still have made my mind as to wich ram I will go after. Im planing in using my encore in 30-06 will this be to much power for the rams. What kind shots and what distance will I be shooting.  Any information from someone that have been there  will be appreciated.

Lou, you said Temple Ranch?  Need more info on that one.   Your 30-06 won't be "too much" power for the sheep.  It should be quite effective depending on the round you will be using.  Then again, it would be good to have more details in order to give you a good answer.  What ranch, terraine, etc...? What type of sheep are  you going after?   I have taken a few with my 7-30 Waters TC.  Both with the factory ammo, and handloads.    More details please.

I meant to say Thompson Ranch, I think is called the TEMPLE. Its located in kerville tx. I have never been there is going to be my first time to go hunting for  Rams. I just was wondering if anyone have been there.
Thanks :D

Lou I think you need to call and get some clarification on where you are hunting.

Thompson Temple is a man's name. He is one of the original purveyors of hunting for exotics. He has had MANY ranches over the years owned by himself and leased from others for hunting. One of our posters here (Tom) works for Thompson as a guide.

I believe Thompson now lives on site at the Rocky Top Ranch and that's where he personally guides and conducts hunts mostly for sheep. But I think he is still involved in other ranches as well.

Until you know where you are going we can't be of much help. I've hunted several ranches with Thompson as have several of us. Mark C. has been to Rocky top 2-3 times I think.

Find out for sure where you are hunting. Get the ranch name and maybe we can offer you some insight and advice. Right now nothing you've told us really helps much in knowing where you will be so no one can give you much help.

Yeah, like Graybeard said,  you must have the info mixed up.  Thompson Temple is the man, and he has a number of ranches , each with a different name.  Who booked your hunt?   What ranch did they book it for? You might wanna figure all that stuff out before the date arrives and you get lost in Kerrville.  Rocky Top Ranch is closer to Camp Wood or Barksdale, not close to Kerrville.  He has both discount and higher price ram hunts there.    markc

I used to be a regular guide on weekends for Thompson.  I've been replaced by a retired military guy who lives closer and can guide during the week.   Unless somebody would request me, he would be the main guide.   There are several ranches Thompson has been hunting around Kerrville.   Its in the hill country, some are thicker than others.   The thick ones, you might shoot under 100 yards.   In an open one, you could shoot farther but you could search for the best ram and work for a good shot on that one.    I'd keep an open mind about what to shoot if you're hunting rams.   You never know what big son of a gun will be in front of you.   If you have one set in your mind, you might pass on a great one of some other type.

Now, if you were hunting a particular type and they located a really big one of those on a particular ranch that would be different.   It sounds like you are not in that situation though.
Are you staying at Inn of the Hills in Kerrville?
