mail order gunsmiths?

The local gunsmith has a 3 month waiting period and unimpressive results to match! I have access to free UPS shipping and wondered if any of you guys have any experience with these types of gunsmiths? BTW, what is the propper name for them, online gunsmiths, mail order smiths???

Most of the work I get is from out of state. It seems sending your gun out for work is more prestigious than getting the local guy to do it. Everybody is local to somebody, but they all send work somewhere else. But if your local guy is lame, there are lots of shops nationwide who can work on your gun. If you're a competition shooter your choices are a bit more limited but whatever your dicipline, there are people that can steer you in the right direction.

They're called busy!  Three months isn't too bad, poor performance is!..  If your looking for something custom, a speciallty smith is a good idea.  For general gunsmithing your usually better off local.  Shipping costs can get expensive fast.. Ask the local gunshop or pawnshop that deals in guns who they use.  They usually have a smith they trust and they probably send more business to him in a month than an individual will in years..
