One of my shooting buddies gave me a pound of IMR 4831. Has anyone tryed this powder in a 270 or 7-08? If so what kind of results did you get with it?

IMR 4831 is a classic and excellent 270 Winchester powder.

Thanks for the reply. I have 2 different kinds of bullets to try with the powder also. I have some Speer 130 spitzer BT and some Sierra 90 HP. I should have fun trying to work up a load with these. Where in TN are you located?

I'm just curious, but did he give the powder to you in it's original container, unopened? Or was it in some other (maybe larger) container marked as IMR 4831? Honestly, I'm not trying to be impertinent; but with gunpowder, you have be unerringly specific and careful in how it is contained/obtained.

IMR-4831 is useful in both the calibers you mentioned. However it was the powder of my choice in only the .270 with 140 grain bullets.

No, it was given to my in its original container and had not be opened. Thanks for all your help. If this powder doesn't give sufficient results what others would you reccommend?

I agree with ricciardelli about the 140 grainers. I have used both brands of 4831 with 130's and 150's for the 270 Winchester, and the Hornady 140 BTSP is by far the most accurate load I have for a couple of Model 70's.
I suspect the 4831 will be much too slow to be efficient with the 90 grain bullets. Pobably can't get enough of it in the case to do much good. A slightly faster burner such as 4064, 4320 or maybe even 4350 would probably be better. Good-luck...BCB

I live near Chattanooga. I have loaded Nosler and Sierra 130s and 140s using IMR 4831 with great results. I prefer 130 Partitions for my "go-to" load for hunting whitetail deer.

H-4350 From 57.0 grains to 62.0 grains
Winchester WLR Primer

130 grain
RL-19 From 48.4 grains to 60.0 grains
Winchester WLR Primer

For 7mm-08:
100 grain
IMR-4895 From 40.6 grains to 46.0 grains
Remington 9-1/2 Primer

130 grain
Varget From 36.2 grains to 43.5 grains
Remington 9-1/2 Primer

Thanks Steve for the loads i'll be sure to book mark them and give the a shot when i get a chance.

TNrifleman i live near knoxville. For me up here the go to gun is a 44 mag handi (fixin to be 445 supermag :wink: ) 75 yards is about the longest shots i get in my area. But i go hunting on a WMA in middle TN alot called Catoosa. Theres alot of fields there, thats really the only reason i have the 270. Thanks for all the help.

What bullet would you guys reccommend for yotes?

I use IMR4831 almost exclusively in my 7mm Rem. Mag. where it really performs well. It also works well with the heavier bullets in my 6mm Rem. and my .25-06Rem. In any of the calibers listed here I'd recommend IMR4831, but only with the heavier bullets. Best wishes.
