17HMR & coyotes
« on: February 02, 2005, 09:32:55 AM »
I'm considering a 17HMR (prob. a Sav.93)
After reviewing ballistics I'm wondering if it will anchor a big yote at 150 or even 100yrds.

Are the 93 triggers a hard problem to solve?
Perhaps a NEF is in order.

Your thoughts.

Lots of interesting discussions on that rimfirecentral forum.  It looks like the .17HMR-on-coyotes discussion is gonna become the new ".223-on-deer" issue.

i have only shot one coyote with a .17 HMR, when i did he ran like someone had set his tail on fire, went about 50 yards, and piled up; started flopping around quite a bit. Whacked him again, and he didnt get up.

First shot was a lung shot, slipped right between the ribs, and hit a rib on the offside afetr going through. bullet came apart there, a bit went through the hide, most stayed just under the skin. Looked to be several small fragments total. Used the Hornady load, my gun didnt much care for the other brands of ammo.

Second shot hit the shoulder blade and blew up there, made a hold about the size of a quarter there but didnt penetrate much... would have to question whether it would have penetrated at all had the shot been at an angle.

i have shot quite a few with bigger stuff, including my .17 Mach IV, and i think i will stick to the bigger stuff... the HMR is pretty mean on crows though..

The general contention of those that have actually shot a coyote with a 17hmr is the 20gr XTP and Gamepoint bullets are much more effective, the Vmax and TNT/Speer bullets can blow up when they hit bone, even a rib and don't penetrate where as the 20gr controlled expansion bullets will expand nicely but still hold together making complete penetration into the vitals.

If you go to Predatormasters there is a sticky in the firearms and reloading forum called the 17hmr Thread, hundreds of posts all in one spot!

What I expected

Thats pritty much what I expected.
Thanks for the link looks like a good site. Glad to see advocates of "using enough gun"
My primary yote gun has been a 243, love that round! But I sold the gun due to it being a right hand bolt (Vanguard 20' VGL)
I'm still interested in the HMR
Maybe a hornet.  Once I cross into the 223 relm I find myself back at the 243 because it is great on deer, goats and lope. The coyotes crumble!
Pelts? Whats the end game? Lose one with a small bore and you are out more than a reduced price due to exit sounds on the ones you got with the 6mm's.

This is a good site!  Keep up the great work!

A local hunter works as a contract hunter for the state tried the .17 HMR for taking called in coyotes.  Out of 20 or so coyotes taken with the little .17, only one was a one shot kill.  He tried the 17 gr. bullets then moved on to the 20 gr. version.  Results were about the same, except it was with the 20 gr. bullet that he got the one shot kill(back of head).  I use a .22 Hornet for called in coyotes, ranges out to 150 to 175 yards, and haven’t lost one that I hit where I needed to.  The general opinion is to limit the use of the .17 HMR to animals under 15 pounds.  Not a bad idea.  Lawdog

I would say under 5# even a tough old coon can be hard to kill as would be some large chucks. I guess the 17 just does not appeal to me I think it is a round that is touted for things it really is not well suited for. Coyotes are one of them.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

WHY ! A 17hmr(so small) FOR AN ANIMAL as large as coyote?  Maybe at 50yds or less then again NO!  I know just takes a well placed shot.  Just have strong feelings about  using something such as the little pill as a 17  just to see if it will do the job.  Leave it to the centerfire at nothing Less than at least a 223 at a 100 or more yrds and then a well placed shot. Also there are the big bores that could reach way out but might be just a lot more than needed. Didn't mean to make my thoughts sound to harsh. Not to offend anyone.

Do not see how you can offend any one for just voicing your opinion. I have had folks say the 22 mag is too small though I wonder how much as the 22 mag is one of those magical cartridges that is "Large" for its size kinda like the 6.5x55 of the rimfire world. I know a 22 mag will drop  deer I have done it and that was in a pistol I have no doubts a 22 mag in rifle would do even better. ( DO not panic boys it was about 30 years ago I know better now  8) ) Still It boils down to bullet placement and what the bullet will do. I know the 22 mag has some smack to it for its size I just am not sure about the 17. I also read a article of some folks useing the 22 mag in africa for some of the smaller antalope critters and such and they said the gun/bullet combination performed well.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

The HMR will put large coons down in a heart-beat as long as they are
shot through the lungs, neck or head. It will take fox shot the same way.
Although I would be using my Tach 20 when hunting specifically for coyotes,
the coyote that is within a hundred yards when squirrel or rabbit hunting
with the 17 HMR is not getting away!

The .223 is a great coyote round out to medium ranges, but so are many
of the .17 and .20 CF rounds.
We need to change our politicians
like we do dirty diapers.............
for the same reason.

17HMR is too small of a bullet for coyotes, start with the 22hornet and work your way up. i would even opt for a 22 WRM over any 17 rimfire

Don't use the 17HMR on coyotes not enough gun! Been there done that! Get a 22 magnum or something bigger Hornet or .223 for close stuff, 22/250 or .243 for long range shots. The 17HMR should be used for the small stuff that means nothing bigger then rabbits at close range inside 125 yards. Ive taken coyotes bobcat with the HMR and its just not enough gun, bullets to small and too light. Shot two coyotes at close range made good hits in side 75yds. coyotes had little reaction to the hit and just ran off :( More hunters are going back to the 22 magnum and selling there HMRs and at an alarming rate! Hunters want to be able to take small and larger small game and the HMR isnt the gun for that! Mag-check

 Keep the 17 be it the HMR or the M2 in the realm of the rimfire and it is a fantastic addition to rimfire family. SMALL Varmint or game with in range.

Bottom line is with the 17's most folks cannot estimate range worth a crap what you think is 50 in boonies may be 75 what you think is a 100 may be 150. So unless it is close pass on it. Bell shot elephants with a 7mm too and was good at it but the average guy would be elephant toe jam. Some may think heck its a mangy old yote if it crawls off and dies who cares. I guess I do as it does not portray the image of hunters that most of us are trying to uphold. Would I shoot a yote with my 22 mag yea if the shot was right and it was close enough and even then a bigger caliber would be a better choice. The first time I shot one and it got away would be the last time I ever used it too. Yea we have all lost game with larger cartridges but they were with bad placed shots if I shot one in the boiler room and I did not get it then that would tell me better choices are to be had. Jim
