Heavy 30 caliber bullets.
« on: July 22, 2005, 02:54:17 AM »
Hi,
Any suggestions for a heavy-for-bore gas checked 30 caliber bullet that is at home in a 1-10 barrel at 308 velocitys. Maybe something around 200 grains. More concerned with accuracy than velocity. Thanks

IF (big if) all you shoot at is paper, there are lots of bullets to use.If you plan on an occasional deer /big game hunt you might have to soften the bullets and slow them down some. You don't say WHAT case you will be using, only that you want 308 speeds. From a 30-06 you can get 2400 fps with a 311284 (210 grain) and 311644 (190 grain). These are with MAX loads.  In the 308 ,311332(180 grain) gets 2300 fps and the 311644 (190 grain) gets 2400 fps, again MAX loads. Lyman 47th edition of reloading handbook. I have the 311334(187 grain) that I am playing with now. It is a pointed bullet and the 3rd edition Lyman book says 2500 fps is possible. I haven't been able to get that fast with accuracy YET.Another 30 heavy I'm trying is the Lee 200 grain. I'm using this at reduced velocity for culling deer around a golf course. It still makes noise but is DEFINETLY quieter than factory ammo. The game wardens will NOT allow the use of a silencer. This bullet is cast of pure lead and loaded to about 1000/1100 fps. Most shots have been within 50 yards and very successful.

Lee has a 175 gr round-nose that works great and is very affordable.  It is about 180 grs aafter installing gas-check.  Lyman has a great 200 gr, I don't have the mold, but I used to buy them here from Billy Marr....they work great too.
....make it count

Lee ,most of my cases are Winchester. 90% of my primers are cci ,and I use what ever powder work best in MY guns. Your mileage may differ!
RX7,imr 3031,h335 and H4895 will get you above 2300 fps in a 308 shooting the 311334.Just get a loading manual for cast bullets and READ IT. Start low and work up. I HAVE ruined a barrel or two trying to get 3000+ fps from cast bullets.(don't try this at home). Come to think of it,  I've dented a few chronographs too!  One thing for sure, a bullet does NOT have to break the sound barrier to kill a deer ! As for the 30-338 case I am not sure,BUT the Lyman book shows 2775 fps for the 311334 and a charge of WW760.this was with a 300 WINCHESTER mag.  THAT ought to ruin bugs bunny's day!

I use a lot of R7 and have used the other powders. Your right I don't need 3000+ to do the job. However I do need to place the bullet properly so accuracy is the first order of business. Thank you for the information.

I am shooting the Lee 200rn gc in a .303 Savage, easily getting 2000fps, good accuracy and no leading with either liquid alox or LBT soft blue lube.
I have just got a .308 barrel for my handi and am just starting the 200 tests in it. So far, IMR 4198 and Reloder7 are giving the best results.
Lee 2nd ed. shows H 380 doing well, 36gr gives 2000fps and this is far from a max load., Varget will do 2000 fps with 33gr, again . less than max by quite a bit. 32gr H 4895 shows 2000fps with 32gr.
, again , less tham max. All these are with a 200gr gc bullet.
I have found any load for a jacketed bullet will be safe in the same load with a cast bullet, usually will not give as much velocity as the jacketed bullet has more resistance and developes more back pressure, so the powder charge developes a higher peak pressure.
To get the same velocity, a faster powder has to be used.
You must try these for your self, and be careful.
