Now I'm learning about installing recoil pads
« on: October 04, 2005, 12:57:28 PM »
When I got my Coyote Cap Model 99 SxS the stock looked more like a 2x6 than a stock.

So I get out my files and rasps and go to work.  Got it more looking like a stock but sanded through the recoil pad while doing this.

So I'm the proud owner of a recoil pad jig and just got my first one (of at least two) sanded to fit the stock.

But, being anal-retentive, I had to sand it perfectly smooth with the stock so I get to refinish the rear of the stock (now the third time but I know how to do this  ).

So in a few days I'll have my new recoil pad-ed refinished stock-ed SxS all ready to go.

With any luck, the recoil pad will come out great and if you drop the gun again it will land on the pad. That could save you some work!  :-D

With Cheyenne's luck, if he drops the shotgun again, it'll land on his foot and break his toe!!!! :-D

Lazrus knows me too well.

Got a couple of coats of tru oil on the Cap SxS so I decided to cut off the Spanish one's stock (metal buttplate) and install one on it too.

Amazing what a table saw with a new carbide blade will do to a stock.  You have to remember to wrap the stock with tape to help reduce the tear out but we're talking 15 minutes from time I started tearing down the gun till I was putting tru oil on it to seal the raw wood that will be under the recoil pad.

Now I have two stocks to refinish  --actually will be fine as it only takes about 5 minutes to do one.
