primers for 357 mag
« on: July 04, 2005, 04:11:22 AM »
I have seen recipes for standard primers and magnum primers for the 357. I have gobs of standard primers, but no magnum ones. I intend on loading below max charges with Unique and 2400 for gas checked 158 grian bullets. Are standard primers OK?

I've tested identical loads with both Mag & standard primers - and the difference in velocity and accuracy was negligible.

I go ahead and use the Mags since they were designed for the cartridge. And most of the loads mention using the mags with ball powders (like Win 296) for more consistent ignition.

But unless you're bullseye shooting..................the standards will go boom just fine.

Bunches of years ago, I had the same problem/decisons to make concerning CCI-500's or CCI-550's in my 357 Magnum loads.  I solved the problem and only use CCI-550's in everything.  Ain't had any problems, and there are no decisions to ponder about anymore.  Good-luck...BCB

Thanks for the replies all. I will just use the standard in my 357 loads.

The only loads I needed mag primers in were H-110 loads. I was getting very erratic ignition using std primers.   KN

Either would work as long as you are getting acceptable accuracy.  It is interesting to note that the only magnum primers that Winchester makes is Small Pistol and the only load that they specify them in is the 357 Mag.
