Velocity Loss
« on: June 12, 2005, 01:45:42 AM »
Has anyone chronograph the velocity out of the Frontier/Compact in 308 caliber.

My load is the 165 gr. Nosler Partition behind 43 gr. of 3031. By extrapolation I think I am getting 2400-2500 fps.

Be nice to know what the chrono reads!

If you can get steadier, get steadier.

Scoutman,  you'll never really know unless you chrono your loads. I've an Oehler 35P and use it whenever I develop new hunting loads. I've found that reloading manuals give some pretty good guidance but pay attention to their barrell length. Also I'm sure you are already aware that any variation in firearm will cause a variation in not just accuracy but velocity due to inner dimensional differences as well as how smoothe the rifling is among other things. My main experience has been LESS than expected velocity. If you encounter velocities over the test velocity stated in a manual and are at max load then by all means Back Down some! There are some fairly inexpensive chrono's out there and the ones I've used seemed to work just dandy!     Hope this helps.
