44-40 and APP

Just got back and had tried 210 gr semi-wadcutter in Win 92, 44-40. I loaded with APP 3F--25, 26, and 27 grs. The 26 and 27 gr groups started to open. 25 was good so I'll reshoot that and also try 24 since APP calls for minimal compression.

The primers on these loads and some smokeless loads shot today with 800X, 700X, 4227, and 2400 slightly backed out of the cases.

What does this indicate?

Sounds like too low of presssure.  May try increasing crimp through Lee Collet crimp dies or increase load pressure by using a cardboard or fiber wad to fill case giving some compression of powder.  I find APP [clean shot] thrives under some compression.  I am now on my 6th case although now use mainly in shotshells as other powders meter so much better for use in pistol calibers

I agree with Hillbilly Jim, more compression and firm crimp. I like to use the factory crimp die personally.

I shot a lot of Cleanshot/APP, but I now shoot the Goex Pinnacle. I don't know why, but it is better. I seem to get better results, it clumps less in the bottle and measure and everything else is like APP. It is made for Goex by APP, but it is black in color and you don't get all the fines you do with APP.

BTW, I love the sound of 44-40 from a rifle. Big boom, lots of smoke is good.

Best group last week was 16.9 of APP with Lee #52 scoop of COW.  Fifty yds--4 in 1" and 3 in 7/8".    17.5 APP + Lee scoop #52 of cow gave 4 in 1.125" and 3 in 7/16".

Today I reshot them.  17.5 APP +#52cow was 4 in 3" and 3 in 2.125".

With 16.9 APP + #52 cow, 4 in 1.75" and 3 in 1.375".

I know both groups opened--don't know why, but I think I'll go with the 16.9 load.
I will reshoot them 1 more time and try the inbetween load of 17.2 g APP.

Using 20:1,roll crimp and pistol primer, cases are not sized.
