new in box A-5- safe for steel?
« on: June 22, 2005, 07:08:13 PM »
on another forum i ran across a new in box Japanese made Auto-5. never been fired the only blemish is two small cracks on the butt from the screws being overtightened at the factory. i think it's Japanese, the reciever reads " NKC Condor Auto-5". full choke, vented rib, jewelled bolt & silver trigger. reciever is engraved with labs and birds. price is $400 Cdn. i fully intend to buy it if my tax return comes in before someone else grabs it. i've heard that the Japanese barrels are strong enough to handle steel shot, is this true? it would be an great bonus if it is, but i want this for upland and rabbits anyways, so not a big deal if it's lead only. sounds like a great deal.

but i have one of those funny feelings that it'll be sold before this is even answered.oh well, have to wait and see what happens.

anything made in the last 20 years or so should be good for steel.

kevin.303,

Beauty, Eh!

My "Sweet Sixteen" has "Invector Special Steel" stamped on the right side of the vent-ribbed barrel right under "Browning Auto-5". That is a beautiful shotgun that anyone would be proud to own, almost too pretty to shoot. What does $400 Cdn translate to in US these days anyways? I havent been up north since last summer and have lost touch with the exchange. :?  Good luck and I am sure Browning will take care of the butt plate for ya if you want.

probably around $300-$350, not too sure, the exchange rate is good right now, well for me anyways, not like it was 5 years ago.

I hope you bought it, how could you go wrong? And you said NIB, I woulda snatched that sucker up faster than a New York minute. That is a heck of a deal in my opinion, that is if it's what you are looking for. Beautiful gun!

well i don't have the cash right now but he did agree to hold it until i did.i'm gonna have many a sleepless night dreaming about it. i've wanted an A-5 for a long time, and would have been happy with just a standard no frills lead only model, but this is so much better!!!

Auto-5 barrels  made in Japan ARE steel capable. The Belgium ones are not.  However, I don't think I would shoot steel out of this one since it is a full choke.  The cheapest option would be to buy the gun and have the choke bored out to a modified.

or buy another barrel, not sure if i will use this for waterfowl, a little to shiney and fancy. but it'll see heavy use in the fields and at the trap and skeet range!
