I have an older Wolverine with thumbhole stock and 209 conversion.  I have hunted with it for about 8 years now and killed many deer.  I shoot 100gr Pyrodex Select with a 200gr. XTP and get about 1.25" @ 100yds.  I think it is definetly a good rifle for the money.  Nothing fancy, but it sure does work well.

Since you are still getting supplies, i would go with 777 2f powder.  It is more potent than older pyrodex products and cleans easily.  I think it is also available in pellet form now.  You'll just need to fiddle around until you find something accurate.
Most of my friends use the Hornady XTP's in weights from 200 - 300 gr. and they perform very well.  For Elk, I would start with the 300 XTP or maybe Nosler partition Handgun bullets.  Good luck!

Elkhound I have been studying up on this rifle on five different forums and it always gets good reviews. Good trigger pull, comfortable stock, and a very accurate Green Mountain barrel. One and a quarter inch groups are not unusual with the Wolverine.
Aim small don't miss.
