H4895 30-30 170 loads
« on: June 30, 2005, 06:04:36 AM »
I have a question about the charge weight of H4895 in the 30-30 with 170 gr Hornaday bullets. In the Hodgdon annual manual it list 30.5 gr as max,in the Lee modern reloading 1st edition it lists 32 gr as max.I have noticed in the Hodgdon and Lee manuals the max for 150 gr bullets is the same at 34 gr's.I have already worked a load up to the Hodgdon max with the Hornaday 170 bullet,Win cases and primers.I know different manuals have different maxes for the same calibers, but I am wanting to know if anyone has used the 32 gr charge in the 30-30 with H4895 and if not, will it be okay to work up to 32 gr's in small increments ? I think the Lee loads are listed at around 40,000 cup so the Marlin 336 should be able to handle them.Just looking for some opinions.Thanks.

I shoot a TC Contender in .30-30 and use both the 150 and 170 grain bullets.  The 150 grain round is a Hornaday JRN with 29.0 grs. of IMR 4895, that moves at an average velocity of 1907 from a 14" barrel.  Three shot group measures at: .200".

I load the 170 JRN Hornaday with 28.0 grs. of IMR 4895 powder with an average velocity of 1717 fps and a  three shot grouup size of .238".

I would show you my targets, but my gallery site is under maintenance.   [/img]
