Author Topic: .270 barrel fitting problems (Read 1029 times)

I purchased a .270 barrel from another member here that came off an H&R Ultra. I put it on a receiver that I purchased from another member.

Shot it a few times, it did not fit correctly and was not locking up tight enough to prevent it from coming open when shot.

THis last week I did some fitting with the barrel-lug-groove to get a better fit.

Shot it today at the range and after the first round I had some difficulty opening the action and the primers were significantly bulged. These were VERY mild loads that I shot a few months earlier without problems so I know over-pressure was not the issue.

Have I caused a problem with headspacing by taking some material off the barrel lug?

It has a synthetic stock that has a tight-fitting forarm. I dunno what to do. Any ideas?

PS - Killed a HUGE rattle snake coming back from the range :eek:

Thanks Quick, I used that as a guide when I did the fitting work.. My question is what did I do wrong, or why are my primers bulging.

I just remembered something. I tried this receiver with my .223 barrel earlier this year because it has a much better trigger. I was having the same problems with the .223 rounds. Bulging primers, but a load that was well within limits. It fit the barrel well and locked up nicely.

Maybe something's not right with this receiver?

I bought it from Raynor back in Jan or Feb I think. I'd swear it was an SB2. Quick search of the classifieds did me no good. He mst have deleated the original for sale post.

I may have to send him a PM and double check, or call H&R and check the serial #

I suspect you are playing with fire, so to speak. Yeah, it's easy enough to do, and it's inviting enough to do; but you could be playing with an injury or worse if you've overdone the metal work.

I'd send the barrel and frame in to H&R and let them tell you what is wrong and how much to fix it. Then make a decision as to what you'll do.

Quick I think I figured it out. I think I have an SB1 Frame.

Look at the differences in the holes for the firing pins.

Notice the differences in the hinge area. One has been tooled, and the other lookes cast.

Also notice the finish properties inside the receiver - one looks cast, the other tooled.

This is NOT an SB2 receiver.

In all pics the Left - receiver that had the .270, right - 45-70/44mag receiver.

I honestly don't think so. I looked at it pretty closely after my eyes shot open. :eek:

The bulging primers were not a pressure sign, but the primer "oozing" into the larger firing pin hole. I don;t shoot max loads in my handi's. I think that might have saved me.

And there is a silver lining to this. Now I have a frame to send in and get a 20 gauge Tracker II. :-D

It'll be a happy ending if I can get this barrel to shoot on my .223 receiver.

And if I can convice my wife I NEED a 20gauge tracker ...

I just got a reply on my e-mail from raynor. I came off a 45/410 Survivor.

Confirmed - It's an SB1.
