Burris or Bushnell Elite ?
« on: February 19, 2003, 01:45:22 PM »
Looking at getting another pistol scope.Should I go with a Burris 3x12 ballistic plex or a Bushnell Elite 3200 2x6?
I like the fact that the Elite has a fixed eye relief. In the field I have noticed that I some times have a hard time with the Burris 2x7.Oh ya its for my '06 :)

PJ,
Get em both, see which one you like best and give the other one away...to me  . Okay, guess that didn't work. I've got an old Burris 2.5-7 on mine, and at 7x you gotta creep up a little on the scope to get a good sight picture. If I was doing it again, I'd go for a constant eye relief, but I picked up the Burris used for $135, so I'm not complaining too loud. It's a great scope. Haven't tried the Elite, but have heard good things.

PJ, how does the field of view in th Elite compare to the Burris @ the same magnification setting?  I went from the Leupold 2.5X8 to Burris 2X7 for a larger field of view, nearly 40% larger at the same magnification. The variable eye relief is a little different when you think about it.

I have not seen or used the Elite, but it sounds good.  Will be interesting to see what posts follow..

you know it really depends on how you plan to use it. I currently have 3, Burris 3x12s. I have owned 2 of the 2x6 Bushnells. I thought the Bushnells were extremely clear and wouldn't hesitate to get another one for hunting if I needed one in that range. The Burris 3x12s are much better, IMO, for target work. Of course, there's always the price consideration as well.

If you're getting it to hunt with I'd probably choose the Bushnell. If you want an outstanding scope for both target shooting and hunting, but don't mind spending the extra bucks, get the Burris. Bear Basin still had a few gloss models for $250 as of yesterday morning.

I think you are trying to make your decision between the wrong two scopes.

You should be asking about a comparison between the Burris 2-7 and the Bushnell 2-6. These are comparable scopes intended for the same job. The Burris 3-12 is a super specialized scope not all that suited for use as a big game hunting scope and I'm assuming that's the intended use for the .30-06 barrel. If target shooting is the intended use go with the Burris 3-12.

If hunting is the intended use then you should decide which is of more importance to you FOV or fixed and long eye relief. The Burris has a much shorter and variable eye relief where as the Bushnell has a long fixed eye relief. However the Burris has twice the FOV at low power than the Bushnell.

If you hunt in thick wooded areas I'd go with the Burris. If in more open areas then it's a toss up based on the eye relief vs. FOV issue. I use both but have more of the Burris scopes on hunting guns. I use the 3-12 only on target guns.

I am goign to get the 3x-12x Burris balistiplex.  I plan on hunting groundhog and target shooting with a  22-250.  I figure the balistiplex instead of just the plex.  I am hoping the marks will calibrate to it.

Burris or Bushnel

It depends on your use.  I use the Bushnell 2x6 and Burris 2x7.  For hunting I definitely prefer the Burris because of its wide FOV.  For targets, I like the Bushnell because of the fixed focal length.  Where I hunt shots are less than 100yds and usually under 50.  The high manification is not needed and the wide FOV of the Burris is highly desired.  The Burris get into trouble when the magnification gets above 4x.
The Bushnell works well at 5-6X which is great for targets, but the FOV just isn't quite wide enough to suit me for hunting.

Having never used the 3x12, I would bet its pretty much for bench shooting where you can use a rest and take time to deal with the focal length issue.

Billjoe - not sure I understand what you are refering to when you say that the Burris gets into trouble when the magnification goes above 4X. Could you please explain? I especially curious as I am considering a Burris scope in the near future.

your killin me pj, i've had to think a while on it. i've got three burris 3x12's. they're super duper. i killed a deer with the 7-08 at 250 yards. i had time to get rest on sand bags and crank the scope up to 12x. so it's possible to get some use out of it in the field. at 12x the eye relief may get a little tricky with the 06 recoil. i havn't hit myself yet, but wondered if i was going to a couple times. my opinion, the burris 2x7 would be perfect. it comes as a adjustable objective model also, which i like. check your pm

Thanks guys,  :D I think I will just stay with my 2x7 Burris. It is a very nice scope, I am going to use the '06 for everything from deer to bear this year in Washington. For Oregon I'll use the 6mm BR for deer and the 445 SuperMag for elk with the '06 for back-up. :)

I have hunted with the Bushnell Elite (formerly Bausch & Lomb) and have had great sucess with it.  It does get a little short on the field of view at 6x.  It holds up well and is a very clear scope.  I would take another if I had to.  The next scope will probably be a Burris though.

Burris over 4x starts to suffer from tunnel vision.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Burris scopes.  I have 5 of them and I love each one.  I prefer them for hunting because they have the widest field of view of any scope that I know of.  But on my 2x7, when I turn the power to above 4, the eye relief begins to shorten creating a dark tunnel effect and a smaller FOV as you look through the scope.  This is really pronounced at 6 and 7 power.  The Bushnell does not do this.  It maintains the same eye relief at every power.  On the Burris, using 5-7x for targets or a "slow" hunting shot where you have plenty of time to aim is ok.  But I hunt at 4x or less to get away from the tunnel vision.

I've never used a 3-12x and maybe it behaves differently.
If you can afford a Burris, go for it.   But the Bushnell is one tough scope for the $.
