Nikon scope
« on: July 14, 2005, 07:50:45 AM »
I have a cheap scope on my 223 Ultra Varmiter and have been shopping around for a better scope.  Was at my local Walmart and they have a Nikon 3x9x40 Buckmasters that was originally priced at $199.93 now reduced to $154.00.

They also have another Nikon Pro that is priced at $149.87.  and by looking at them I can't tell the difference between them except the Buckmasters might be just a little longer in length.

Does anyone know anything about either of these scopes or know of a better scope in this price range?  And yes, I know this isn't much to pay for a good scope.  Thanks

Jon at The Optic Zone, a GBO sponsor, has the Prostaff for $139 and the Buckmaster for $175, both are excellent scopes made in the Philippines. Another great choice in the under $200 price range would be the Burris Full Field II or the Bushnell Elite 3200s from Jon also, you are not likely to to beat Jon's prices or service anywhere else...

Yep...Jon and his wife Tammey are some great people to work with...very knowledgeable and willing to go out of their way to help...I highly recommend them...and when you cal...ask the about another good scope...the Meuller's...I bought a 4x16x50 tacticle and it is one sweet scope...and plan on getting their 3x10x44 Illuminated one here this week...so...I'm not knocking the Nikon's...but there is always alternatives...

I have a buckmaster on my muzzel loader and it works great for that. I really would look at Mueller scopes from the optic zone. They are also great people to work with.  I have a 4x16 tactical on my handi .223 and its a great scope, they even gave me the free sun shade. I am also going to get a mueller for my .243 handi to replace my 3x9 bushnell.

I bought a used Buckmaster 3-9x40 from a co-worker.
Put it on my Tikka 243 W/H.  Had it 3 years now and it is always where I left it. The Bushnell Elite 3200 is another good scope.

if you're varmint hunting a 3-9x40 may be lacking in scope power but i have a Pro-Staff 3-9x40 on my H&R Ultra Hunter in .308 and its a superb scope. $159 for a buck? sure it aint the 4x cause all 3-9s are $199 i've seen.

That's the standard price for the ProStaff, but a pretty good deal on the Buckmaster.  Prostaff is Nikon's lowest line, but still not too shabby.  Buckmaster is the next step up and pretty decent.  Agreed, you can NOT beat www.theopticzone.com .   For a varminter scope I'd get something with at least a 12 power max magnif, preferably 18 or 20.  You can get a cheapie Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 with AO for under $100, and it should stand up to .223.  I use this on several rimfires I have.

Have the Nikon 4.5 x 14 AO on my .223 bull and love it.  A lot depends on what you are going to do with your rifle....if its anything over 100 I agree with others, go with something with a 12x or more...Not familar with Mueller scopes, have heard they are good, just don't own one yet.

Yes, it is a 3X9X40.  As I stated in my original post the scope was $199 and marked down to $154.  I do agree that I may need more than a 3X9 though.
