204 loading problem
« on: July 31, 2005, 02:37:14 PM »
I am loading for a 204 ruger handi rifle. I am loading with the lighter loads from the hodgdon webesite. 28.5 gr BLC2 and 29 gr  kWinchester brass. asMy cronograph shows velocitys of 3700 to 3800 fps. My problem is my cases  show signs of flattened primers.  This would indicate high preasures. I am using cci primers and loading hornady 32 gr. vmax Any Ideas  will be glad to hear  from the people on this board   coldmold

I was getting pressure signs above 28 gr of blc 2 with my handi too. But I am not sure if I was getting a false positive from the cci primers suppositly they are a little softer than the others.  Funny thing is that with the 40 gr hornadys I could get to .5 of max (blc2) and maintain accuracy but with the 32s the closest I could get was 1.4 ~.

But the accuracy winner so far is using the 39 sierra's and h4895 .2 off of max and I am getting .35" for 3 @ 100. Next on the list are the 35 gr bergers (my coyote load)

I've been working up loads for the 40g v-max and had the same thing with pressure signs on the primers. I then studied and tried using the same primers that hodgdon book had listed and no more flat primers they had the fed 205ms listed. I,m using 28.5g bl-c(2) oal @ 2.250 trim to 1.850 Hornady cases. Hope this helps.
By the way the smallest group I've seen is around .350"

I thank you fine gentlemen for your replys. I will certainly purchase some Fed. primers and try them.  It be one real fun little gun to shoot but my finances require that I reload. Besides reloading is a fun thing in itself. Will give a range report when I get er done.  coldmold

Had that problem in my .204 with the std CCI primers, but no such problem with the BR or magnum primers.  I've read that they have thicker cups.
