With the safety in the central position, remove the bolt from the rifle. The release is on the left side of the receiver in back. With the bolt out of the rifle the bolt shroud lock (#16) is visible where the bolt shroud (14) and the bolt body (
join. This button is pressed to allow the entire striker assembly to be unscrewed from the bolt body. See the attached diagram. The bolt shroud lock is #16 on the diagram. Be aware that the diagram is for a pre-war M70 but the bolt shroud lock is the same in operation and location. It is unwise for the ameture to break the bolt down farther as the striker spring is under a lot of tension and if you slip you'll be looking for parts for quite some time. The striker spring is retained by a split washer on the new models, not the grooved sleve shown in the diagram. Also some of the bolt parts are restricked so modifications are a poor idea, as Winchester won't sell you replacements. Removing the striker assemblly should give enough access to remove and lubricate the areas in question..
