308 and 270 ammo?
« on: July 16, 2005, 01:54:05 PM »
i am getting a 308 heavy barrel and a 270 ultracomp back soon...i know every rifle is different...and i don;t have the money nor the time nor the experience or smarts to start reloading so i am restricted to factory ammo.....i want something that shoots pretty accurately (after all what fun is it if your shots are all over) and doesn;t break my wallet to shoot....i have access to just about any manufacturer of ammo since i live 20 minutes from cabelas...20 minutes from gander mountain...and 10 minutes from 2 excellent gun shops....can you give me any manufacturers..bullet weights..bullet types to start with?  thanks guys

I would try some of the new Federal Fusion ammo in both...I just picked up some to try out in my 270 UC barrel...and have great luck with the 30-06...so  give some a try...bullet weights would be 150's for the 308...130's for the 270...they do make heavier if needed...not to bad a price around #17-$18 a box...next up...some Winchester Supreme Ballistic Tips for the 270...and believe it or not...some plain ole Power Points for the 308...they seem to do pretty good too...

for relatively cheap, but effective factory ammo i'd go to walmart when they're running a sale, or anywhere else for that matter, and buy the Remington Core-Lokt ammo of either 150 or 165 gr's for the '06, and of 130 gr's for the .270.    Don't kid yourself about how effective the Core-Lokt can be.   It may be the original, but it is still one of the most effective at dropping deer and black bear.....if your rifle shoots them accurately.    Sure, the big thing now is premium ammo for a lot of guys, but our ancestors wiped out the white-tail in a lot of places using roundballs, muzzleloaders, .30-30's, .44-40's, and so on.

Deer and Black bear can be effectively dealt with through the use of older cartridges and rifles.    Think of it, the .270 is 80 yrs' old now, the .30-06 is almost 100!    The .220 Swift is an old one......and Still one of the Fastest.

you can get what you want/need at WalMart in many instances.

take care,

I would give the Rem Corlokts a try also, they drive me nuts trying to match or beat the speed and accurcy of the corlokts. I can beat the accuracy with the bolt guns but the handi's seem to love them. Digger

Personally I am not a real big fan of the Core-Lokt's. Effective-yes. I know a lot of hunters who only use Core-Lokt's. But most my rifles I have shot them in didn't like them a whole lot. As for "hunting" accuracy, then yeah they do the trick for sure. Then again your gun might like them.
When you go to Walmart they(well at least mine does) sell Winchester power points for the exact same price. My rifles seem to like Winchesters ammo better for some reason, be it in my Remington, Mauser, Handi, etc...
I also have had good success with Federal ammo. Those Fusions are great, and my friends 308 loves them. You can also buy Federal Match Gold for your 308-excellent consistancy in these.
I say give a different box a try each time you can and see what Your gun likes.
Just my 2 cents.

Well, for what it's worth, the Federal Fusion ammo sells for the same price as the Remington core-lokts do here, $10 for .30-30, and $13  for the .270, .308 and .30-06 at Sportsmans Warehouse, they don't have the .243 ammo yet. I don't expect the Fusion to be sold on sale like the Remington ammo does frequently, but if it shoots as good in all calibers like it does in Mac's .30-06, I'd be trying it when ever I can.

The Fusion ammo...isn't going to be available everywhere for a while...it's that new...I was lucky and got a hold of a couple boxes real early on...
