New NEF BC: Need suggestions!
« on: July 17, 2005, 03:49:11 PM »
Hello all,

Just got done buying my 4th 45-70, and would like to make this one adapted to longer distance plinking.  I already have the ability to make most any ammo/bullet I want, so I want a sight that will help me get there.  Is a tang sight out of the question?  I am not sure how I would adapt to that...    Would a Smith Ladder sight give me the accuracy I want at longer distances?  I wish they made that with a peep.   If someone has a suggestion, please let me know.  Also,  any idea what the barrel will slug out to?  I have firelapped several guns, and pending the results of my first shooting, would guess this one will be lapped as well.

The front stock is beautiful, and the rear is really terrible.  Looks almost bleached, or at least sweated out.  It is flaky towards the buttplate, and pending the receiving of my new laminate stock, will probably try to get NEF to replace it.  I am surprised they let it out of the factory.  I suppose it may have gotten baked on the way here.  I did get it for a great price, although since it was the only one I have ever seen, I had to snatch it up.

Also, any favorite pet loads for a long barreled gun?

Thanks,

David

Greetings Dr. A.

Well all is not lost in your questions

Here at Thunder Ridge they have sights and boy howdy do they have sights.

The Smith ladder sight is a resolve to your sighting problem if you want distance without windage adjustment.  I have put these out 6.5 inches on the barrel of the Buffalo Classic's 32" barrel which greatly increase my long range shooting when used with a front blade sight.  Just like the old hunting rifles during the great Buffalo Harvest era.

What I finally settled on was a rear sight ment for the Springfield Trapdoor rifles and at Thunder Ridge they have what is needed for longer range shooting for the short barreled 22" 45-70's or the longer barreled Buffalo Classic of 32"

If you have a short barreled 45-70 and want longer shooting distance I would put the CARBINE USA437 sight and if putting the sight on the Buffalo Classic I would put the USA 473 that is windage adjustable and are marked Side ramps are graduated to 500 yds and the ladder to 1500 yards.

I hope this helps ya out some  :D

hi dr a  the smith comes with a peep slide that wot i was told when rang buffalo arms. as far as windage goes, you could open the dovetail in the block and drill and tap a lock screw through the dovetail in the sight be sure to mark a witness mark on the block and the sight before you start. if you fit the lyman 17 ahb .404 front target sight to replace the .584 you will get the range. hope this helps.

Thanks guys,

Montanan,  That looks like what I'm looking for.  What about a front sight for it?  (Buffalo classic)

Also, was there a need for drilling and tapping?  Thunder Ridge wasn't for sure...
