Best Factory Round
« on: July 16, 2005, 05:15:47 PM »
I have a handi in a .270 and a 30-06.  The .270 groups about 3" and the 30-06 is wider than that.  What factory rounds are you all using and getting the best results with.  I don't reload.

Thanks,

Casey

Welcome caseyq to GBO forum, I can not tell you anything about
two rifles, I don't any thing in those calibers, Plus I reload for
everything, I have rifles that have had many round fired. Never
a factory round,  Maybe you should think about reloading!
 Good luck
Marv..

what kind of ammo are you using now? Also what kind of set up do you have? 3" and larger groups I am wondering about the scopes you have. I would think hornady 150 gr sp would work great for the 30-06 and a 130 gr for the 270. I know some guys on here use federal and work great also.

Welcome Aboard :D

There are a-lot of variables in getting good accuracy...and it was already asked for you to share a-little about your rifles..set-up..and loads used...also..if you use the search feature on the top of the page..you can look back over all that has been posted on both the 06' and the 270 and see what everyone has been shooting...use the tips we have given and chances are..what you have tried might do a-little better for you...or you might glean a new way of shooting or prepping your barrels...ammo selection is a tough call...what may work for 1 might not do too good in yours...but...for what it's worth...try some of the new Federal Fusion ammo in both...my 30-06  seems to really like it...and I'll let you know next week if my 270 does...

FWIW, i think Mac' gave you a very good answer.   the 'search' function is seemingly underutilized at times.   it's a great feature that will help you.

i did a little search for you.   for topic i typed in shooting technique, and for forum i limited it to nef/h&r centerfire rifles.    i pulled up THIRTY-TWO pages of postings that you can look through.

just pick a posting title or subject that you believe will relate to your question within those 32 pages and you should get a lot of help.

blessings upon you,

Caseyp: Alot of good advice, the subject of best factory ammo has been discussed a length many times, use that search!

A little more direct answer is that I own a used .270 Handi well worn and a little loose, with el'cheapo Rem. green box it'll shoot undr 2" @ 100yds.  I'd definiately check your set-up. When you do your search check on bench and shooting technique and rifle set-up. Have A Ball:  :) <>< Duce:

There are not many Handis that will shoot that bad, two in in one place no way.

There is  something loose and changing ammo is not going to cure that.

Scopes can be notorious bad actors, try a different scope. While you at it
remove the scope base, clean the screw holes and glue the base down with J-B Weld, but don't glue in the screws.put some oil on them.

Once the glue is set remove the screws and remove the oil from the holes and screws apply blue removable lock tight and tighten the screws into the clean holes.. No more loose base. Some bases come from the factory with loose screws.

Gluing the base down will stiffen the chamber end and lessens the vibrations created by the cartridge discharge, not much but every bit helps.

If you are handy you can fill in the base overhang with Devcon steel and drill and tap another screw into the barrel for more rigidity.

Check the scope ring screws and apply lock tight to the rings.

See if there is anything wiggly in the lookup and the standing breech.

Check the latch engagement.

Check loose forearm hinge. You may need a thin spacer between the hinge cap and the wood.for the forearm to make solid contact. Remove the wood screws and glue the hinge cap to the wood, with the spacer if you need one.

Free float the forearm with an o-ring.

Check the stock bolt with a (9/16??) socket wrench. Stock wood shrinks and creates a loose stock, bad news for accuracy. That bolt has to be real tight.

Check the trigger for trigger pull weight.

Now you can try some good ammo, like the one that Mac uses.

The stock bolt takes a 9/16" socket....
