Rem 760 in .308

I recently had an uncle that passed away and he left all of his possesions to my father.  One was a old rem 760 chambered in .308.  I then found out it was handed down to him by my great-great grandfather.  It is in excellent condition and the only thing needs is a good cleaning.  He used to drive tacks with it and all it had were the iron sights.  I enjoy reloading and my father gave it to me to tinker with.  All I am looking for is a goood starting point for a hand load for this gun.  Any ideas or previous experiences would be helpful.

I have reloaded for a 760 for many years.  But in .270.  While some people recommend small base dies I have always used standard dies.  Do not get into hot loads the M760 does not have the extraction power of a bolt action.

Make sure that you clean the magazine.  As a kid I carried an extra one in a pants pocket while hunting.  Found they fill up with junk.  The 760 does not cycle gum rappers and coins.  I now carry the extra magazine in a pouch.

I don't use small base dies either. I had a 760 30-06 and now I have a 7mm-08. For both of these rifles a load between the listed starting load and max load was where I get the best accuracy. I don't carry an extra loaded magazine with me now. I carry extra ammo just like I do for my bolt actions.

I have a 7600 in 308 and so far I really like it.  Accuracy runs 1" - 1.5". I use IMR 4064 and 4895 when reloading 308's, just my preference.  I don't use the small base dies. I just full length resize with standard dies.  However I do find rounds that won't function in the action.  After about 20 rounds of reloads I run them thru my pump action, the ones that don't close properly I use in my bolt action.

I have "Dave in WV's" M760 and love it.  I use small base dies but can't say whether or not there's any benefit.   I think that they're great rifles that might surprise at how accurate they can be!  Good luck with it and take in the woods this fall.
