So, how bad is H&R/NEF's QC??

I just picked up a heavy barrel .308 Handi, but I may be sending it back to the factory all ready.  The barrel/action does not lock up very tight with the forearm removed.  It has a lot of lateral play, and is no where near as tight as my two .45-70's.  Now this is the second gun to have this problem out of the last five I've bought.  I had to send back an Ultra .25-06 for the same reason.

I can't really knock H&R's customer service, as they take care of you very fast.  However, I have a difficult time understanding how things like this can be missed at the factory.  Granted, I haven't shot the gun yet, but I am not comfortable with it having any play when its supposedly locked up.  

Anyone else have this problem?

Did you special order a Survivor from somewhere...? I always check for problems before accepting any rifle purchased this way...if I've orderd one...and always check them over real good at the store when I can handle one...if they won't let you take the forearm off ...I won't buy from them...

As to the Q C from the factory...I haven't had 1 problem...excepting having the wrong scope rail installed...others have had their fare share though...but for me it would be A-typical...

Same here, have bought a bunch of new Handis and Ultras and 2 BC/Targets, none have had a problem like that, or anything serious. Typical deficiencies are rough chamber and butt pad screw holes stripped.

I just got back my new barrel for my 223 ultra because I gouged the chamber while trying to remove a stuck casing in the field.  While it was at the factory, and I ordered a 204 barrel.  When I received it the 204 barrel was installed.  When I broke it open I too had excessive lateral movement.  I call customer service and asked what the problem was where this was suppose to be "hand fit".  Customer service rep assured me that this was no problem.  I questioned futher and asked about who QC'd this gun after the fitting.  She then put on the manager.  He gets on the line and I explain the problem to him.  He also assures me that everything is correct.  I asked why I have several other H&R guns and they don't wobble back and forth on the hing pin.  I questioned further about the QC process and asked about their process prior to shipping back to the customer.  It was then he changed his tune.  He said that is was the forstock and they would send me a new one.  He said that this fixes the problem 90 to 95% of the time.  It did fix the problem.  However I do question their QC process prior to a gun being shipped back to the customer.  To finish the rest of the story the 223 barrel fit perfect.  I don't have the accuracy out of my 204...yet.

My suggestion is to call your customer service rep and ask why the gun has this problem and see what they say.  If not satifactory request to talk to the customer service manager.
