Accessory Barrel Program for Canadians
« on: July 17, 2005, 04:37:06 PM »
I would like to get a 410 ga. and 7mm-08 barrel for my Handi. Does any one have any ideas as to how the Accessory Barrel Program can be extended to Canadian Handi owners?

Sorry, H&R won't ship out of the US to an individual. It would have to be arranged thru a dealer and H&R probably still wouldn't work with them due to the import/export permits required. It would definately be a ground breaking process to get it done... :(

Find out from your dealer or ask your dealer to find out from the Canadian importer if you send your rifle to the importer if they would ship your rifle to H&R to have the barrels fitted, could take awhile to get back to you as in New Zealand the importer has H&R ship out to them twice a year. Of course there is all the shipping costs to add up and if it is worth it.
I am in the future are going to try a special order from our New Zealand for a new rifle fitted with a spare barrel 280rem and 204 combo
Time will tell if this will be possible.
Howard.

There is a Canadian service or dealer who does factory warranty work.
I got the number fro H&R. This guy or dealer may be able to get a barrel.
I think he is in BC.

I got the number some where but can't find it right now.

Some one in the US could buy a barrel for you and mail it to Canada. there is no problem for an indivitual ( not a company) to send a USED barrel to Canada. It cost about $ 15 to mail with surface mail.

If you know some body with multi Handi's he can send in a frame and get a new barrel for you. In this case wou would have to pay for shipping the frame too. Fitting a barrel to a frame is very easy most of them fit without any work.

I like to find a 26" 410 barrel myself. They cost $39 US new.

I believe that any new barrels must be registered to the frame. Any arrangement for an accessory barrel would have to somehow take this into account. All guns have to be registered in Canada now so I think it will have to go thru a Canadian dealer. Fred I would appreciate it if you could let me know who the B.C. contact is.

Thanks

When I first got into handi's I called and according to the person there was no facillity to register the barrel. Because according to them the gun is the frame/action.

But that was 2 years ago so I would call again.  Fred if you rebarrel a bolt action what sort of if any notification do you have to give to the registry. I'd imagine the rules that apply there would apply to a handi.

If I remember my registry cards right they only mention manufacturer serial#, action and if the  barrel is longer than 18.5 (not actual lenght). Caliber is not mentioned, but I am working from memory right now, so I could be wrong.

Its hard to say what is required but I believe the certificate held by the authorities records caliber. It may be as simple as a phone call to the registry by the importing dealer to add a caliber/gauge to the frame. I think the problem is to find a dealer that is willing to handle all the paper work and shipping etc. for a reasonable sum.

Don't sweat you guys. Barrels are not registered, it is only the action that is registered type and make. I have a BR action that has two barrels in different calibers. The Handi I bought as a 25-06 has now a 223 barrel.

When you look at your registration there is no caliber on it, only the serial # of the firearm and the make. In a rifle it states a barrel length more than 470mm. Not even your name is on it but your regitration cerificate #.

I bought the action with out the barrel it is registered as such. Calibers are registered on handguns only . A few weeks ago I send a barrel to the US and traded it for another caliber. Which was delivered to my house no questions ask.

Please don't take my word for it check it yourself, you owe it to your guns.

A barrel is not a firearm, period!

With all the hallebaloo in Canada about firearms every gun owner should know the laws. Same as driving a car when you break the law you get dinged. You break the law with firearms,  that is that last you ever see of them.

Why? Do you guys have unregistered rifles?

In the states we do, if we bought them before 1968 or got them used from a non FFL holder.

Aulrich.

Nothing whatsoever. Nothing is required for barrels. If that was the case the nightmare could not be lived with. Target shooters change barrels all the time, 4 barrels in a skeet set is very common. Rifles with three or four barrels are no rarity. only the frame or action with the serial # is registered.

Hello Fred

Is there any chance you can find and post the information on the B.C. H&R service/dealer in B.C.?

THanks

Just contacted NEF and they gave me the name and phone number of a service depot in Winnipeg Man. When I asked NEF/HR if they will ship barrels to their service depot the answer was 'We don't ship barrels into Canada because of regulations'. Not satisfied with this I phoned the service depot and asked if they can get barrels from NEF/HR in the U.S. Same answer. Looks like a dead end.

For those following this mini-saga, I contacted the Canadian Gun Registry and enquired about the regulations regarding importation of a rifle barrel. Also I asked about taking my action to the U.S for barrel fitting. They said that a barrel is not registered and it would only be necessary to declare it to Canadian customs on reentry into Canada. The action would have to be declared going into the U.S. and leaving.

The regulations inhibiting a Canadian Accessory Barrel Program are American regulations as a result of 9/11. As I understand it from dealing with other gun related components it would cost over $100.00 U.S. for an export permit and would take up to six weeks. These same regulations I believe would inihibit one from legally bringing a barrel from the U.S. into Canada even if you could acquire one while in the U.S.

I guess I'm done.

That is too bad. In the US firearms can only be shipped to licenced dealers.
Certain parts but not action can be send to persons in the US.

As an alien you are not allowed to buy firearms and certain related items in the US , there is a long list of those items.

Licenced dealers are not allowed to send gun parts to Canada without an export permit. The export permit is quite expensive. Each individual shipment requires some sort of authorization.  Like complete action need a Canadian import permit since an action is considered a firearm both in Canada and the US,

The manufacturer has to submit the Canadian import permit and his export licence to the BATAF in Wasshington DC which will then issue an authorization.

Once you know how to go about it is is quite simple, but not every manufacture will bother with the extra paper work involved.

If you want to import an action form a maker, you get him to assign you a serial# for the action which you preregister with the Can. Firearms office in Miramachie NB even though this action is not made yet.

Then you apply for an import permit, you attach a copy of the registration, which you send to the action maker in the US.

He takes all this stuff and send it to Washington and gets authorization to ship to this action to you in Canada, providing he has an export annual licence. For you to receive it is no trouble since it is already registered.

Some individual may get you a new barrel and ships it to you. He would have to send his frame to H&R, since they don't sell barrels  alone without them fitting it. The reason for that is CYA. liability.

Or you just buy another two Hanidi's in gauge and caliber you want. Never see too many on the second hand market.

FWIW, it doesn't appear to be prohibited to send gun parts to Canada according to postal regulations, unlike the UK which prohibits gun parts being sent to an individual. But there could be an update to this since 9/11 that is not stated in the IMM. Before I attempted this, I would do considerable more checking with customs, specifically.

This was brought up at RFC when a fella from the UK wanted a sear for his CZ452, I have one and was willing to send it to him, but regulations prohibit me from sending it to him, but I can send it to a licensed dealer there, he has never got back to me on it, so I don't know what happened on his end.

Fred,
FWIW - All the shotgun barrels marked "$39 US new" are actually $64 because of the $15 fitiing fee and $10 handling fee, all this before the cost of you shipping your receiver. I have the latest dicounted order form and none of the standard shotgun barrels are part of that sale, only the .410/45C and 20 ga. Ultra Slug.

Thanks. That is a 61% increase. Pretty good profit. I am not ready to order a new one still hoping to find a used one. The use is a bit sticky where I want to shoot the crows, I may upset the surrounding folks.

My cabin is in a summer village and in the woods. I have to talk to all the people around to see wether the shooting of crows is cosher? I bush wacked one the other day with my scoped target air pistol. Knocked him down for the foxes, I never did find him, he ran off.
